This morning at church, a couple spoke about the Mater Filius home in the city. The name means, “Mother and Child” in Latin. A couple of years ago, the house was built on the campus of another church. The mission of Mater Filius is to defend life with love by helping pregnant women, offering a path forward through support, resources and spiritual guidance to nurture the lives of mothers and their children. One of the speakers shared a story of one of their graduates. When she moved in, she had an almost 1 year old and was pregnant. She gave birth and lived at the house for another couple of years while she got her GED, then her CNA license. She was able to save enough money to pay off her debts, move out of the house and into her own apartment, and purchase a vehicle. One young woman even became Catholic along with her children as she was amazed that the people there would spend their lives caring for her. A quote from their website is, “At Mater Filius, we help you discover the value you have as a human being; you know the greatness that is within you and you have the ability to love and be loved.” I was in awe of the care and commitment the young mothers are given. The home is truly God’s hands at work.
