Today I went to a BBQ with the Fostering Hope program. The event was held at the Catholic school that I attended when I was in first grade. I have driven by it a couple of times but this is the first time I had actually been back on the grounds. As I looked around, I remembered the white cement wall that separated the play area from the street. It seemed a lot smaller now than it did then. Everything else looked somewhat familiar, but not as clear as that large white wall. What I do remember though perhaps more so was the “feel” of the place. I know I always felt safe there. It had the same kind of spiritual, peaceful environment today. At the party, one of the girls told us about her recent experience applying for a college scholarship. She and a handful of other candidates were treated to a weekend in California including hotel, meals, and even a trip to Disneyland. She, and the group she was with, received the scholarship and much more. The private donor creates a community for the youth, including an internship and mentoring program. She is an older youth and has done so much work basically on her own to put herself on the path to success. A friend and I were talking a little later about what an inspiration she and many of the other youth are to us. If I were in her situation, I am not sure I would have the stamina or attitude to accomplish as much as she already has. I am so glad for this new opportunity for her that she admits, “will change her life”. It was pretty special for me to be in this safe haven and hear the story of a young woman who is getting a much deserved helping hand.
I Found God today in a peaceful place and a beautiful story of a new, deserved opportunity.
