Thankful For Service

It was a beautiful day today, so my parents and I had lunch out on the patio. After a while, a young man came around checking the sprinklers in the grassy area. He and my dad got to talking about the tree that nearly came down in the blizzard a few weeks ago. My dad shared that he worked as a weather forecaster when he was in the military. The young man thanked my dad for his service and said that we (the collective citizens) are moving forward only due to the work that was done years ago. My dad in turn thanked him for his service working on our yard. I enjoyed listening to their conversation and mutual respect for one another.

I Found God today in one man’s appreciation of the other.

Great Giggles

I was able to see my far away family via computer today. Everyone was doing very silly things and entertained me and my mom. My 3 year old granddaughter was being very mischievous. She was purposefully being disobedient over and over again as my son did his best to keep her from getting into things. It was a great game. Her giggle and belly laughter was pure joy.

I Found God today in laughter.

Take Them Home

Today on one of the caregiver’s groups that I belong to, people were talking about having difficulties getting their loved ones out of a nursing home. There were problems at the facilities, and the people were not able to just take their love one home. I had read stories of this happening in magazines as well. I thought about my current situation and became more grateful that I am able to care for my parents. I am so appreciative that we have been able to work through challenging issues so my parents are able to remain in their home and I am able to remain with them.

I Found God today grateful for the ability to care for my parents.

Extreme Green Thumb

My sister came over this weekend and re-potted a couple of plants for me. She had re-potted one about a month ago, but it’s leaves were turning brown and curling on the edges. She said she thought it was getting fertilizer burn from the potting soil. The soil she got wasn’t her usual brand, but the salesperson told her it was great, so she used it. I also had a problem with annoying tiny flies in another plant. So, my sister bought new soil, took the plants out of their pots, scrubbed the pots with a mixture to eradicate the bugs, and put the plants back in the new soil. I was her apprentice since I really have no clue. She said starting from when she was young if she would see or get a new plant, she would research to find out everything she could about the it and what it needed to grow best. I said I have done the same thing in my life, but with people. And there-in lies our difference. My mom was getting ready to water her orchids today. My sister re-potted those too a while ago and now one is blooming. My mom commented about how my sister really knows what she is doing when it comes to plants. When she was young, my mom gave her a plant cart and my sister just loved it. When we would go on vacation, my sister loved observing the plant life. Now she has a huge Christmas cactus that she started over a decade ago from a cutting of a cactus that belonged to my mother. A couple of years ago, she took cuttings off it and we passed them around to friends and family. It is just who she is. It amazes me how each one of us is created to do something very different. And each of us has an opportunity to bless others while doing what God created us to do. Not only does she take care of our plants, my sister grows an amazing organic vegetable garden. She sells much of the produce, but she also donates tons to the local food bank.

I Found God today in the different talents He gives each of us and how we bless others through that.

Want To Be Like God

Today I was happy to have the opportunity to attend a short Lent retreat at our parish. The talk was given by a Sister of the Merciful Jesus who spoke about the amazing mercy that Jesus offers to each one of us. She was full of joy, enthusiasm, and faith that was contagious. There was so much to take in and I prayed to remember what I should, when I need to. She had many stories that gave me a different perspective. I will share one here. When God created the angels, Lucifer was not happy with who he was and that he had to live under God’s direction. He wanted the power. He finally completely turned his back on God, thus creating hell, where he is his own god. Then, God created people. From the beginning, people weren’t happy with who they were. Adam and Eve ate from the “Tree of Knowledge” because Lucifer told them they would be like a god if they did. Everyone wanted to be like God. So, God sent His Son, Himself in flesh to the world to be the example. If anyone wants to be like God, Jesus has shown us how to do that. We just need to follow His lead. Hard, but true.

I Found God today with a different perspective of Jesus.

Postcards from the Past

As my dad was looking through some papers today, he found a stack of old postcards that were written by him and my mom from some 40-60 years ago. They logged most of the trips that were taken. Most of them were sent to my dad’s parents who had kept them and now they are in my dad’s possession. I remembered some of the places myself, but not all. I came across a couple of postcards that were sent from my dad to my mom. One was addressed to “my wife”. To me, they were the sweetest.

I Found God today in postcards from the past.

Surprise Flowers

Today as my mom and I were out for a walk near the house, a flower delivery truck drove by. I wondered if he had delivered flowers to the house. When we got back home, we saw a big bouquet of flowers on the counter. We all thought for a minute, wondering if it was a special day. The card envelope said it was for my mom. My dad said he asked the delivery guy who it was from, and he didn’t have that information with him. My dad thought she might have a secret admirer. My mom read the card that said, “Happy Spring! Lots of love, hugs,” We still wondered who they were from. My dad read the card also and couldn’t find a name. I looked over the card too, then realized there was an additional card stuck to the first. It finished the message and was signed by my sister. It was a fun mystery for a few minutes and beautiful flowers to celebrate Spring.

I Found God today in an unexpected flower delivery.

Experiencing Shen Yun

In the past few months, there has been lots of advertising for the show, Shen Yun. Every time my mom saw it, she said she wanted to go. Eventually my dad bought the tickets. Today was the day of the show. The purpose of the dance company is to try to keep the ancient Chinese traditions and culture alive. According to the directors, the society is being controlled by the communist regime. Each individual dance in the show was introduced by a telling of the story we were about to see. The music was interesting, the costumes were stunning, and the athleticism of the dancers was unbelievable. There was also an Eastern spiritual tone that was played out focusing on peace and goodness. The backdrop included an animated video in which the characters would pop in and out. It was a beautiful and entertaining event. In our house, we never know what is going to happen from day to day,. We were all very happy we were able to get out and experience this fascinating show.

I Found God today in a captivating show.

God’s Timing and Encouragement

Today a friend stop by unexpectedly to return some dishes and stayed for a few minutes. While she was here, she offered some encouraging words and shared a bit about her faith. She did not know what perfect timing she had and how much I appreciated hearing what she had to say. I love it when God puts people in places at specific times and they have helpful words of wisdom.

I Found God today in God’s timing and encouragement.

Positive with Challenges

One of the teacher’s at my mom’s exercise class is always full of energy. I learned today that she has a child in her 20’s who has special needs, a child in junior high, and a child in first grade. Her mother in law and father in law also recently moved in with them. Her husband travels from time to time. And she is working on her master’s degree. It is amazing the stories people have and the challenges they live with. I would not have thought her to have such a full plate and continue to be so bubbly and positive. Just proved to me again that you never know what people are going through.

I Found God today in the positive attitude of a woman with many challenges.
