Safely Home

A priest friend of mine, Fr. Tom Washburn, shares his homilies online. Today’s said in part that he had come across a prayer card that had belonged to his aunt who had passed away a number of years ago. The night before her funeral, her daughters, gave him this prayer card, which they had found in her well-worn Bible. The card contained a well-known poem often read at funeral’s called “Safely Home.” In the margins his aunt had handwritten two notes. One said, “Please read this at my funeral,” and the other, “My last prayer is that you all get right with God, so I’ll see you all again.” His aunt, especially as she was nearing her own death, had a mind and a heart that was fixed firmly on Heaven – and she wanted the same for everyone she loved. The rest of his homily went on to describe how Heaven is our destination and how we all want to get there, but typically don’t think about it or work towards that on a daily basis. We get so caught up in daily activities, necessities, and problems that we can forget to look up. And I know I have many faults and failures and can then feel like I’ll never make it. Thank God for His Mercy to be able to start again and keep going. A relative sent us that same prayer card when my father died. We read it often and get teary eyed. It is a beautiful reminder of the invitation we each have to make our way towards Heaven, to be with all our loved ones in God’s loving Presence forever.

I Found God today in the poem Safely Home.

Together

After my son’s family found out that his wife’s mother died, his wife and oldest son flew back East to be with the rest of her family. The younger two children stayed and finished up their school year this week. This morning I took my son and the two kids to the airport so they could head out as well. My granddaughter gets motion sickness very easily and was nervous about the long car ride to the airport and the airplane ride itself. On the way there, my son was so good at keeping her calm and playing games to keep her occupied. Once they arrived at their destination, they had another long car ride before reuniting with the rest of the family. But they all made it without incident. My son said it was good to be all together. I am grateful that all went well today for them.

I Found God today in the blessing of safe travels and togetherness.

The Gift

I was so happy that my mom was feeling better today and wanted to go the Fine Arts Center free day. We looked up the current exhibitions and found one that sounded interested called, “The Gift”. This is the description:

As scientists and artists, we are all observers of the world. We are all interpreters and storytellers,” said Dr. Gosnell. “We hope people leave this experience feeling a closer connection to the universe and with an understanding that the story of science belongs to all of us. We can build a more welcoming world from the stories we tell.”

The Gift is an immersive installation that animates contemporary astrophysics research to open up metaphorical space for grief, care, and renewal. In this experience, participants enter a music-filled reading room, where they encounter an all-ages illustrated book—based on the astrophysics research of Dr. Natalie Gosnell, Assistant Professor of Physics at Colorado College—that invites responses both tactile and emotional. This book tells the story of two stars that are so close to one another yet so far from us that they appear as a single point of light in the sky. Their fates are intertwined; one star, at the end of its life, transfers its material to the companion, allowing the companion to burn brighter and to appear—for a moment—younger, brighter, bluer. This tender story and playful experience heeds the call of anthropologist Emily Martin, to “wake the sleeping metaphors of science.”

As described, my mom and I entered the room and found a couple of tables set up with the books. We slowly read through the pages that included words and interesting geometric pictures. The story explained how a dying star will give what it is made of to the nearby star which will burn brighter and hotter. It then encouraged the reader to ponder what that would look like for people. At first, it was a disturbing thought. But then, I remembered before we left my mom said the exhibition would likely appeal to my space-loving father. While not in a physical way, my dad did impart who he was at his core to his family. We all keep our eyes to the sky, love taking interesting photos, and appreciate the beauty of nature. Perhaps we “burn brighter” with the gifts he left for us. When we left that area, we came across another display encouraging the participant to step into the light. There were cards with questions on them from the book and a spotlight shining on the wall. I stepped into the light and entertained mom a bit with my giant shadows. Then I put her wheelchair in the light so she could make shadows as well. I thought the display was intriguing and it did certainly make me reflect. It was a good day.

I Found God today in the gift.

Long Lost Friend

Today as I was running errands, I found I had some extra time. Since it was Ascension Thursday, I decided to go to Mass. Even better, I arrived early so I could go to Confession and there was no one else in line. I waited a long time, until it was just about time for Mass to begin. As I stood up, the person came out of the Confessional. It was a friend I hadn’t seen in years. We both just looked at each other, stunned for a couple of seconds, before we hugged hello. Then the priest came out and wondered if I was going in. I did go in and asked if he had enough time. He looked at his watch and realized he actually didn’t. He asked a couple of questions, had me repeat a prayer after him, and said the absolution prayer. It was the shortest, easiest Confession I had ever experienced. Then I sat with my friend for Mass. He sang with his boisterous voice and I remembered singing in the church choir with him almost 40 years ago. After Mass, we reminisced, laughed, made sure we had contact info, and promised to get together. It was a wonderful, unexpected, blessed hour in my day.

I Found God today in a long lost friend.

Family Priest

I chatted with my daughter in law a little today. She said she and her sisters are getting everything in order for her mom’s funeral. She was happy to say that a priest who has been an important part of the family life will be able to be the celebrant. He married my son and his wife, Baptized and Confirmed children, and has always been one that the family could turn to. That was good news. He is such a blessing and will make the funeral personal and meaningful.

I Found God today in the family friend priest who will be celebrating the funeral.

Loving Eyes

As part of my morning prayers today, I read Psalm 65. It talks about how God has created such a beautiful world that we live in. I thought about some of the camping trips I have made. Several times, I have been blessed to be on the top of a large mountain and overlooking the spectacular view. I remembered the scenery and how in awe I was of God’s creation. People find God in nature – even those who are “not religious”. As I thought about how God reveals Himself to us in so many ways, it came to me that perhaps we can be overcome by the beauty of the world because we are actually seeing it through God’s eyes. God breathed life into each one of us. He loves us completely and dwells within us. God also brought life to our earth and He loves what He has created. So, if we see His creation through His eyes – His Spirit that dwells within us, we would naturally love it as well. As I write this, I am hoping it makes sense in words. It made sense in my heart.

I Found God today loving His creation through His eyes.

Support in Tragedy

I received a phone call from my son very early this morning, which is never a good thing. He told me that his wife’s mother died unexpectedly last night. It was quite a shock. I could hear my daughter in law crying in the background. They were able to make arrangements for her and my oldest grandson to fly out East to be with the rest of the family. My son worked on getting things in order for them to be able to join them as my two younger grandchildren are finishing up their school year. It was a very difficult day. But I was glad my daughter in law was able to go immediately and that there is so much support for the family.

I Found God today in support for an unexpected tragedy.

Blessed Mother’s Day

The flowers started arriving yesterday. This morning, my sister came and brought more flowers. They were and will be such a joy especially for my mom. My sister also brought food and we had a lovely girls brunch. After that I went to Mass. The deacon gave a great homily. He told a story of when one of his kids was in college and had finished the semester. He was to spend a year abroad. The deacon’s wife went to help the young man pack. He was instructed to make 3 piles – 1 with things he would take with him, 1 with things that would be sent home, and 1 of the things that would go into storage. When the mother arrived, the deacon joked that there were 3 piles, 1 of dirty laundry, 1 of clean laundry, and 1 of questionable laundry. The mom asked why he didn’t do what he was asked. He said it was the end of the semester and had to get together with friends, and besides, he knew his mom was coming to help. Of course, the mother did get everything organized and helped to pack up everything. When they went to the storage unit, they found it to be not much more than a tin shed. So, they went and purchased some cellophane and wrapped everything up before they left it for a year. The deacon compared the mother’s actions to that of the Holy Spirit. Just like the loving mother, the Holy Spirit can come into our lives and help us make sense of the piles of stuff we have. It can protect us and make sure we are all taken care of. Just like the young man counted on his mom, we can trust that the Holy Spirit will be there for us. I loved the analogy. After Mass, I spent some time with my son and had lunch and a movie. It was a great day. Mom did very well overall today, which was the biggest blessing of all.

I Found God today in a blessed mother’s day.

Thankful In All Circumstances

I am grateful and humbled as to how God speaks to us, nudges us. Today was a particular rough day for my mom. Later, when she was feeling better, she read the reflection from Jesus Calling. Again, as Jesus was speaking just to us, it said:

“Thank me in the midst of the crucible. When things seem all wrong, look for growth opportunities. Especially, look for areas where you need to let go, leaving your cares in My able hands. Do you trust me to orchestrate your life events as I choose, or your will? If you keep trying to carry out your intentions while I am leading you in another direction, you deify your desires. Be on the lookout for what I am doing in your life. Worship Me by living close to Me, thanking Me in all circumstances.”

I Found God today in more promptings to trust Him and let go of my own desires.

Love-Light

Today my mom had some energy when she woke up, which was wonderful. After she got ready for her day, she did some cleaning up and dusting. Then she got tired. I encouraged her to lay down and relax. She was afraid she would go to sleep. I told her that was perfectly fine if she went to sleep for a little while. Her body required rest, so that is what should happen. She was serving her body the best by listening to what it needed. Later, she read today’s reflection from “Jesus Calling”. It talked about the need to rely on God in order to love those around us and serve them. It said as Jesus speaking, “Take time to rest in the Love-Light of My Presence,” as well as quoting Matthew 11:28,  “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” It was a very fitting reading for both of us.

I Found God today in His reminder to rest in Him.
