Safe Travels For All

My brother had intended on making a trip here last month, but then we had the big COVID scare. So he made arrangements to come for a few days this week. He started out his 2 day drive yesterday. He came upon a winter storm, but it was just a little snow. Today, however, there was a layer of ice on the road. Everyone was going slowly but there were still a couple of accidents. Once he drove out of the ice, he drove into dense fog. It was a harrowing journey for him and we were glad he made it here safe and sound. Also in the past 2 days, both our next door neighbors were traveling via the airlines. All their flights were delayed and some were even cancelled. One neighbor arrived home a day late at 1:00 am. The other one made it home 2 days late at 2:00 am. I saw both of them today. They, like my brother, looked pretty exhausted. At the same time, everyone was glad to have made it safely.

I Found God today as people had safe travels.

Back to God

Tonight in my Bible class, a student shared a touching story. A family member was pregnant and found that the baby would not live long after birth due to extreme medical problems. She continued the pregnancy until the baby was born. The family had a priest waiting in the wings. When the little one came into the world, he was given a name, held by the family, Baptized and given Last Rights at the same time. He lived only 10 minutes. Now he is in Heaven where he is able to pray for his family. I thought of the baby that my mother had who lived for a few hours. He also was named and Baptized and given back to Our Lord. Sometimes it makes me sad, but other times, I feel blessed to have a brother praying for us all and look forward to meeting him.

I Found God today remembering that all life begins with God and He brings them all back to Himself.

Bye Jesus

Today in church, a very young couple sat in front of us with 2 little boys. When they arrived, the dad pointed out Jesus on the crucifix to both children, even though the younger was still too young even to walk. Mom and dad had their hands full, but the boys were so cute and pretty well behaved. At the end of Mass, when the altar server walked out with the crucifix, the older boy waved and said, “Bye Jesus”. Adorable.

I Found God today in a young couple teaching their young boys about Jesus.

Grammy Day

My granddaughter’s school had their Fall Carnival today. It was a good opportunity to spend the day with her. I took her over to the school where she played games, won prizes, ate popcorn and saw new friends. She even overcame her fear by going through an obstacle course and sliding down a big slide. A very nice older girl helped her when she was struggling. Then we had ice cream and headed back to my house. Once there, we played Candy Land with my mom. She showed my sister all her treasures. And we exercised with the big exercise balls. It was a wonderful day. As a bonus, my sister took my mom to visit my dad and stayed for 2 hours, which is the longest a visit has been for quite some time. He was awake, attentive, and alert. I’m so grateful.

I Found God today in a really enjoyable day.

Doing Better

My mom and I went to visit my dad a little earlier today. Since he has been sleeping so much lately, we thought we would try an earlier time. We were greeted in the parking lot by one of the girls I hadn’t seen in a long time. I was afraid she had quit. She said she had been sick, but was back to work now. Inside, we were greeted by the young woman who got us set up in the facility at the beginning. Everyone was so happy to see one another. We made our way into the dining room and found my dad finishing his lunch with the physical therapist. The therapist reported that my dad had been doing better the past couple of days. He has been out in the community again and eating better. Then, one of the caregivers I hadn’t seen for a while told my about her experiences with my dad over the past few days, doing her part in helping him to recover. My dad was definitely more awake and aware than we had seen in a few weeks. We looked at one of his favorite catalogs with funny sayings on t-shirts and we all laughed together. Then he was tired, so we tucked him in bed for a nap. My mom especially was happy that he seemed better today than we have seen in a long time.

I Found God today knowing my dad is doing better and that there are so many caring people looking out for him.

The Sitter

Today my grandson came over to hang out with my mom for a little bit while I ran an errand. He brought his little sister who didn’t have school today. They all made PBJ and butter sandwiches for lunch. When I returned, my grandson dropped off his sister and headed to my son’s house. My son adopted a dog not too long ago, and my grandson has been spending some time with her in the afternoon so she’s not alone. He’s a patient, kind, and thoughtful sitter.

I Found God today in my thoughtful grandson.

Grateful for Care

My mom and I visited my dad this afternoon. Unfortunately, he was fast asleep. My mom tried to gently wake him several times, and he actually opened his eyes once, but he was not going to get up. He has been especially sleepy since COVID and it’s probably better for him to sleep a lot anyways. There were a couple concerns that I had now that we have more contact with him. I called his PCP this morning and was told that she was going to visit him today. When we got back home, she called. She had seen him and evidently just missed us. Not only did I get my questions answered, but she also had a plan of action for a few other things. I am so grateful for the people who are caring for my dad.

I Found God today feeling grateful for those caring for my dad.

Back Inside

I made an appointment for my mom and I to visit with my dad this afternoon. They have been scheduling only outside visits as they make their way through this COVID breakout. When we arrived we were given the good news that the facility is COVID free and could resume indoor visits. That was great to hear. I saw one of my favorite caregivers and gave her a big air hug. We found my dad sitting at a table with the speech therapist. She gave us her update and got some chairs for us. It was good to see him, pat him, and hug him even though he’s struggling as he continues to recover from the illness and falling. I spoke to the nurse on the way out who had only returned a couple of days ago from her own quarantine. They certainly have been through a lot there. I hoped they are feeling our appreciation and prayers.

I Found God today being in more contact with my dad.

Just a Sprinkle

Yesterday, my sister and mom went to visit my dad. Evidently he had a bad night and didn’t sleep much. So, when they came for their visit, he was fast asleep. The caregivers were somehow able to get him up and outside for a brief period of time, but I guess he was pretty out of it. He couldn’t keep his eyes open and said he was dizzy. The nurse ended up taking him back into the building in a wheelchair so they could keep a closer eye on him. You just never know what you’re going to walk into. My sister brought some things along to talk about and look at, as well as a bottle of Lourdes holy water. Even though their time together was short, my sister assured me that my mom was able to bless my dad with the Lourdes water. This morning, my brother was able to see my dad and even brought his dog to say hello. He reported that my dad said he felt like he was going to die yesterday, but was feeling much better today. I can always count on Our Lady of Lourdes.

I Found God today in the blessing of holy water.

To Love Them

The other day, my son and I were talking about his dogs. The first dog they got is calm and sweet and almost never gives them trouble. Then they got another puppy. She’s the opposite and is quite crazy. I told my son that I didn’t understand why they got another dog, when the first one was perfect. He responded that their first child is perfect, but they had more anyways. I’ve been pondering that statement. Today in church, we were reminded that October is Respect Life Month and were encouraged to say extra prayers especially for the unborn, aborted babies, and their parents. I began wondering again why God would create tiny new lives that would be aborted, knowing that would be their end. Then I thought about my son’s statement and the answer came to me – to love them. God is love and to Him, all that He creates is from love and for love. And they – and we – are all perfect to Him.

I Found God today remembering He creates in, from, and for love.
