Welcomed Change of Pace

It has been pretty hectic around here. Therapists and nurses have been coming over 4-5 days a week. My parents have had several extremely restless nights. Yesterday, the last therapist came over to discharge my dad from the program. Last night, my parents slept like they haven’t for years and got up late. It was so nice not to have to get ready for anyone or anything as there were no appointments today. My dad even stayed in his pajamas for most of the morning. The whole day was relaxing and a welcomed change of pace.

I Found God today in a more relaxing atmosphere.

Spider Bite

My sister has been feeling just terrible for over a week now. It all started when she discovered a spider bite that appeared to be infected. She made a trip to the hospital where they took care of it, took some tests, and gave her antibiotics. Two days later she came down with a high fever. Another trip to the hospital confirmed she had the flu. She feels she probably got it from her first visit. She quarantined herself to her bedroom for days. Then she found out that she did indeed have a staph infection from the spider bite. Things seemed to keep going from bad to worse. She has been toughing it out though and doing what she ought to with the encouragement of her husband. Today she announced that her temperature was finally back to normal. That was definitely good news to hear and I’m so glad she is getting better.

I Found God today as my sister feels better.

All About Physics

My parents didn’t sleep well last night, so my dad was pretty tired this morning and not really looking forward to his appointment with the Home Health Care Occupational Therapist. She was to evaluate the progress my dad made and discharge him from that area. But when she arrived, my dad perked up a little. She was very nice, very pretty, very smart, and very helpful. But the thing that impressed my dad the most was that she loved Physics. My dad was happy to be discharged, but being a physics teacher for years, their conversation about that topic is what meant the most to him.

I Found God today in a delightful and smart young woman.

Young Love

My nephew has been dating a young woman for a couple of years now. We have always thought they have been a very good match. They compliment one another. They treat each other with kindness and respect and their love for each other is evident. My nephew called us this evening to let us know that they got engaged. We all congratulated them and said how happy we are for them. My dad said it will be wonderful to have his fiance as a part of the family. Hearing such good news was so welcomed and really warmed my heart.

I Found God today in young love.

Got to Mass

It has been weeks since I have been to Mass. We have been watching the Sunday broadcast on EWTN. We have also been blessed by a gentleman from our church visiting to bring Communion. But this morning I was able to take the opportunity to attend Mass with my son. I very much enjoyed being in the church, singing the songs, seeing those preparing to be Baptized, praying and receiving the Eucharist with the community. I have recently been reading the Acts of the Apostles, and the experiences of the early Church really came to life for me. There is such a sense of God’s Presence in the Mass that cannot be found anywhere else. And being with my son was an added bonus.

I Found God today in Mass.

No Control

I talked with a friend of mine today whose mother has been having some health issues. She was in the hospital for a couple of days and will now be following up with assorted specialists. They are still looking for definite answers and potential treatments. My friend was understandably upset about the situation. As we talked, I was reminded of how I felt when my dad had the stroke – or when my mom is having a difficult time. I try to do all that I know to keep my parents healthy. Yet, things still happen to them. And then I get angry about it – like I did something wrong or didn’t do something I should have. That kind of thinking is, of course, ridiculous. After all, my dad is almost 90 years old, my mom is almost 88, and they are both human beings. They have a mortal life as do I. No matter how much I try or how much I worry, their mortal life will eventually come to an end. But, they also are a part of the spiritual world, in particular the Body of Christ as am I. We have been Baptized into this body and will remain a part of it through eternity. And the promise of the joy that will bring is beyond anything I can imagine. The more I pray and trust in God’s love, the more peace I have. Knowing that He is in control and has our best in His heart now and forever, I can reduce my worry and stress. It is hard to come to terms with the fact of what little control I actually have, but when I can, life is better all around.

I Found God today remembering how much I need to Trust in God’s perfect plan for the lives of my parents and me.

Man Spa

Before my dad had his stroke, he had decided to let his hair grow out some. It was getting pretty long, then he ended up in the hospital and rehab for about 4 weeks. During that time, he kept saying how he couldn’t wait to get it cut. My brother promised that they would go together when he felt up to it. He’s been home 3 weeks now and today was the day. My brother and my dad went to the “man spa” as I call it – their favorite place to get a haircut. My dad got the full treatment including the hot towel facial. They returned clean, shiny, and relaxed. They also ran a couple errands, so it was a pretty big day for my dad and he managed very well. He was more than ready to nap this afternoon.

I Found God today as my dad got a little pampering.

Final Visits

Today my dad had a visit from the speech therapist and the occupational therapist. Both of them told my dad that they were impressed with how well he has been recovering and that today would be their last visit. They encouraged him to continue doing what he needs to do. It was good to hear and we appreciated their help and positive feedback.

I Found God today in positive therapists.

Contemplating Lent

It has been a long while since I have been with my prayer group, but I was able to go tonight. It was wonderful to be with faithful friends and to know they have been praying for me and my family. We read the scripture about Jesus being tempted in the desert and discussed the beginning of Lent. I felt so spiritually uplifted.

I Found God today contemplating Lent.

Prayers Matter

Yesterday a friend told me that her mother was admitted to the hospital in a potential stroke prevention situation. She asked for prayers and tons of friends responded to her plea. After spending the night and going through additional testing, her mom was discharged and sent home tonight. That was great news.

I Found God today in a reminder that prayers do matter.
