Found The Job

My sister had been diligently looking for work since she was laid off a few months ago. She was getting very frustrated and anxious due to the lack of response she was receiving. A month ago she did have an interview and they finally got back with her for a second interview the other day. We have been making a point to pray for her – especially during the last few days. She called this morning to tell us the good news that she was offered the position. It was very exciting. She is elated because it is not just a job, but one that she really wants. I am overjoyed for her.

I Found God today in the work that my sister found.

Amazing Weather Event

My parents and I made a trip up to the cabin today. When we arrived, we noticed the familiar yellow pollen from the pine trees had covered the deck. In the afternoon, some small thunderstorms moved in, but cleared enough to go out for a walk. My mom wanted to identify the numerous wildflowers that had bloomed. So, I took her ipad out and started snapping some pictures. When I was some distance from the house, I heard the wind start to pick up behind me. I turned around and saw a giant cloud of something headed right toward me as the wind whipped into a frenzy. I didn’t know exactly what the cloud was – rain? dirt? I turned my back expecting to get a little wet or pelted with dirt. I didn’t feel a thing except for the crazy wind. I turned back around to see what was happening. There were giant clouds whirling about as the trees bent low in the strong wind. Still unsure as to what was going on – dust devil? tornado? – I ran back into the house and shut the door tight. From there, we looked out the high deck and saw the clouds of yellow moving up out of the valley and following the tree tops. The wind was shaking up the trees, releasing the yellow pollen. It was so strong that it threw the lawn chairs to the other side of the deck. My dad said he had never seen anything like it before. It was an awesome sight to behold and an incredible event to experience. Ten minutes later, the sun was shining and the clouds had dissipated. It certainly gave me a deeper appreciation for wonder of weather and nature.

I Found God today experiencing an awesome nature event.

Protection During Mission

Our neighbors returned from their month long mission trip working with Syrian refugees and we got together tonight. They had plenty of stories of how God was present during their trip. One was that while they were away, neither of them were ill despite the slums that they traveled through every day and the fact that the flu made it’s way around the team they worked with. Once they returned to the USA, they discovered how many people were praying for them. They visited relatives and friends and found that they were praying for them, along with some of their friends and fellow church goers. My friends were both humble and grateful.

I Found God today hearing how He protected my friends on their mission trip.

Think

Today I went for a walk with a friend. I had taken the trail through the park a couple of times before. It passes the back of several apartments and homes that are bordered by fences. This time, I saw something different that caught my eye. On the fence that was facing the trail, there was an old pallet that was painted with words and symbols:

“Think left, think right,   Think low, think high,    Oh the thinks you can think if only you try.”

There were also a couple of interesting pieces of art – small carousel horses – and a sign of how to find the artist on Facebook. It was just their little way of making people stop and think. It certainly worked for me and put a smile on my face.

I Found God today in one person’s way of reaching out to others.

Back To Class

At my mom’s exercise class, there are college interns who help. While the school had a break for 2 weeks, so did the exercise class. Today they started back up again. It was somewhat like a reunion. You would have thought we hadn’t seen each other in years. Everyone was so happy to get back together again. The Parkinsonians had a challenging class and the caregivers got together and caught up on what happened over the last couple of weeks. Most of us went out for a hike in the beautiful summer sun. I am sure I have said it before, but this class is such a blessing and support on so many levels – physically, socially, and mentally for my mom; emotionally and socially for me too.

I Found God in the great group of people we connect with through my mom’s exercise class.

African Priest Connection

Today at church, we had a priest visiting from Tanzania. He came to talk about the destitution that is there and try to rally some financial support for a school he is building. He talked about the celebration of the Feast of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ today. Catholics are connected by this common belief. When they celebrate Mass in Tanzania, they are doing the same prayers and reflecting on the same Scripture readings that we are here in the United States. So, we are connected through the Mass. He also reminded us that we all make up the spiritual Body of Christ and brought a gift for the parish. It was a sculpture made from the hard trees in Africa. The carving depicted a person lifting up another person, lifting up another and so on. He explained that this is how we are meant to live our lives here on earth. We lift one another up, give each other a little boost, and help each other get to Heaven. Even though it was hard to understand the priest, I really enjoyed listening to his message.

I Found God today in the connection with a priest and parish in Africa.

Communions

A friend of mine who happens to be a priest always shares his homilies and I love reading them now that I live far away. When I read his words, it reminds me why and how much my faith grew when I was able to hear him in person. Tomorrow we celebrate the SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI). He wrote about first Communions, last Communions, and every one in between. The first paragraph of his homily was so moving:

“Earlier this week, I was called to the ICU at the hospital for an urgent call for someone who was near death. The person in question had been away from the Church, away from the Mass, away from the Eucharist for more than 50 years. They wanted nothing more on that day to be reconciled. I spent some time in conversation, and then brought the grace that comes from the Anointing of the Sick, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Then I said, “Would you like to receive Holy Communion?” Their eyes widened incredulous, “Is that possible?” “Absolutely,” I said. “Your sins have been forgiven and God wants to be close to you.” We prayed again and then I gave communion to someone with the most beaming face I’ve ever seen. As I left that hospital room, all I could hear repeating over and over was, “Thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus.”

You can read the entire homily on his blog here if you like.

I Found God today in heart touching words from a treasured friend.

Miraculous Staircase

When my cousins left here, they were headed to Santa Fe and planned on stopping by the Loretto Chapel. The chapel was once a Catholic Church and now is a museum. It holds the “Miraculous Staircase”, named as such due to the amazing circular structure that still baffles experts. The builder is also unknown. It is said that the nuns prayed for someone to come and fix the problem of getting into the choir loft. On the last day of their novena, a man showed up on a donkey with some tools looking for work. When he was finished, he vanished without pay or thanks. My parents and cousins talked about the chapel and my mom remembered how she sat for a long time in the chapel listening to a live instrumental group that was there. Today she opened up one of her magazines, and there was an article about the place. I also talked to my cousins who were able to visit the chapel and really loved it. It is funny how you get talking about something and suddenly it shows up everywhere. The story of the chapel is intriguing, and I felt the joy from the people who visited there.

I Found God today in an amazing story of a miraculous staircase.

More to Learn

After my mom played the piano today, my dad encouraged her and told her how much he loved to hear her picking up and working through a new piece. My mom took a few minutes and reminisced about her last piano teacher. She started lessons with her after playing for about 40 years. Yet, she said she learned so much from her and playing with her was a completely different experience. She explained that her beloved teacher helped her to play the music with feeling – with her soul. My mom took lessons from her for 23 years. She was dedicated to the woman, continuing to visit and play for her as her health failed. My mom misses her still after 15 year since her death. I have such respect for my mom – her dedication, her humility, and her open-mindedness to have more to learn even after decades of practice.

I Found God today in my mom’s dedication and humility.

Discovering Relatives

Today was the last day of my dad’s cousin’s visit. His wife had made contact with another woman on the ancestry website who was also working on the family genealogy. She gave her a call and introduced her to my dad. The woman started right in talking about her history. It turns out that she lived in our state for some time. They traced their lineage back to a couple of generations. She also talked about how she connected with cousins that she didn’t even know she had. I was amazed at how families can be traced so easily now. The woman was so excited to talk with my dad and to meet these long lost relatives. We were all thrilled as well. After our guests left, we were busy exchanging pictures and texts. I was able to touch base with their daughters who were children last time I saw them. I think making these kind of family discoveries helps people to realize the we are not in this alone, that we are wildly connected. And I think that brings us all just a little closer together.

I Found God today discovering relatives.
