Taking Flight

We have so much enjoyed watching the pair of Red-Tailed Hawks over the past few months as they built their nest on the tall pine tree in our yard and raised a single chick. During the last few weeks, the fledgling has grown considerably and we can see the difference in it every day. It has been losing it’s downy white feathers and growing in the more brown and tan colors of it’s parents. Last week it started hop/flying around the tree branches. One particular day, it was on the very top of the tree and spread it’s wings wide as a storm blew in. It obviously liked the feeling of the wind beneath it’s wings. The wind picked up and got pretty hectic and at one point, it looked like the baby was hanging on by one toe – or talon. It quickly went back down into the nest. I knew it would be flying soon. Yesterday evening we had another thunderstorm roll in with quite a bit of rain. Our neighbors called to say that the fledgling was on the roof of our house. I went out with the camera and there it was, perched on the roof, absolutely drenched. I went inside to bring my mom out, but the bird was gone by the time we came back out. Today I saw the baby fly from one tree to the other, then again in a big circle around the tree and back up to the top. I understand it will stay close to home for a couple more weeks. It is truly an amazing gift to have this family right here where we can watch them all day and appreciate the wonders of nature up close.

I Found God today in a growing baby hawk.

Son’s Strength

My son participated in a weight lifting competition today. He truly has been gifted with physical strength. I was grateful that my brother was here to keep my mother company so I could go watch my son in person. I was amazed at how the competitors were able to lift near 3 times their own weight. To me, it was an incredible thing to see. I remembered attending high school and college track meets, which were similar in a way. There were family members and friends there cheering on their people and the others. And there was a lot of waiting for a few moments of action by my son. A couple of his friends were there and it was nice to visit with them too. Of course, it was impressive to see my my son lift that amount of weight. He finished 2nd in his weight division and was pretty happy with what he accomplished.

I Found God today watching the strength of my son.

Anticipating an Adventure

Today we had a birthday party for my grandson who turned 15 years old. We had his favorite food – taco salad. And his mom made an amazing Oreo cake. For gifts, instead of “stuff”, a couple of us are taking him on adventures. It’s fun for both of us to go out and have experiences that are just for him. I gave him 3 choices and am excited to see what he chooses. I look forward to our time together.

I Found God today celebrating my grandson.

Difficult Travel

My son and his family took a trip last week to visit friends and family that they left last summer when they moved here. It’s always a challenge to travel almost coast to coast, even more so with three children. Their return trip proved to be as difficult. The first flight of two was delayed. When they finally made it to their first destination, they were literally minutes too late to catch the next flight. The plane was still there, but everything was closed up and they couldn’t get on. They ended up having to stay in a hotel overnight. Thankfully, they were able to catch the first flight out, though that left little sleep. They arrived in the state this morning and after rounding up their luggage and their car, they had an hour and a half drive. Once they finally made it home, they were exhausted. I was happy to drop by for a quick visit and bring them some food. It was good to see them.

I Found God today happy that my son and family made it home safe after difficulty traveling.

Throwback

It was another sweltering day, but my sister and I planned on taking a hike this morning. However, it was difficult to find the trailhead in the little town in the foothills. It was even harder to find a place to park. We ended up in the downtown area where we could pick up the free shuttle. But we had a hard time figuring out what line was running and where the pickup site was. It just so happened that we were parked near the Penny Arcade. We decided to just play games and walk around the town instead. We played lots of games that we knew when we were growing up and some new ones. We had a great time and didn’t overheat doing so. I told my sister that it must have been God saving us from ourselves.

I Found God today having a fun game day.

Mission Trip Stories

Today we went to our neighbor’s house for a visit and lunch. While we were there, they showed us the video of the mission trip they just returned from in Ecuador. They always have great stories to tell about their trips and the impact the Bible/English Camp has on the participants and their families. One such story is in one class as the children were working on their papers to match the words with the facial features, one child just started singing, “I’ve got that joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart . . .” It is a song that they started learning just a couple days before. Soon, all the children in the class joined in the impromptu sing along. Our friend said it brought tears to his eyes. We enjoyed visiting and hearing their stories.

I Found God today in the impact that friends are having on others.

Community Picnic

This evening was the annual community picnic. I was happy that my mom wanted to go and had the energy to do so. She talked with a couple friends who she hadn’t visited with in a very long time. And we met some new people as well. We were afraid that it would rain on us, but it only sprinkled as people are their food. Once the lightning started, however, everyone started cleaning up and heading for home. My sister came with us and she helped my mom get back to the house while I helped clean up a bit. So many of the neighbors said how happy they were that my mom came. We had a very enjoyable time.

I Found God today enjoying time with community and friends.

The Good Book

Since we are in a cleaning out mood, my mom has been going through her bookcase. Today she pulled out a funny illustrated paperback named, *The Good Book, by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as told to David Evans.” It’s just a short book with humorous captioned cartoon type drawings. The one she called me over to see was a hand drawn picture of a man lying on a bed with his eyes closed, while 2 women and a man talk nearby. Under the picture it said, “I’m afraid Lazarus is dead, madame. Only a miracle could help him now.” We laughed. My mom laughed through most of the book. That was good in so many ways.

I Found God today in my mom’s laughter.

Morning Walk

Last night 3 of my siblings spent the night. I woke up fairly early and decided to go out for a walk. One of my sister’s was awake too, so we both went. I used to walk my dog every morning. She died many years ago, and I can’t even remember the last time I went for a walk early in the morning. It was so nice and cool and beautiful. The company of my sister made it even more enjoyable.

I Found God today in an early morning walk.

Honing Out

All my siblings, my mom, and I got together today and started going through my dad’s library. People chose books that they wanted to keep and we talked about what to do with the rest. There were several collections that entertained my dad including Star Trek, old science fiction from when he was in high school, Sherlock Holmes, photography, science, and space among others. There are probably over a hundred college textbooks as well. We spent much of the time remembering many of the books, how and when we read them, and telling stories that were sparked by the memories. My mom has been wondering what we were going to do with all the books and things. Today was a good start to help ease her mind.

I Found God today being with my siblings and remembering my dad.
