A Nasty Fall

So I have missed a couple of days blogging due to tending to my dad who took a nasty fall. This is what happened: Some friends of mine were in a nearby city at a convention, so I decided to go and meet them for dinner. We connected at the hotel and were just about to get dinner when my phone rang with a number I did not recognize. I thought it best to answer. It was an EMT. He was nice and calm as he explained that he was taking care of my father. He said that had fallen, but was conscious, aware, and carrying on a conversation. He said that he was banged up, scraped his face and that his thumb was obviously broken and would likely need surgery. They were taking him to the local hospital. My dad wanted to make sure he told me not to rush back – that he was OK and being taken care of. My friends and I huddled in the hotel lobby and prayed. After a bit, my mother called to tell me that some friends were with her and would take her over to the hospital. Since it was past dinner time, they made sure she ate before they left. The friends waited there at the hospital until I came so I knew my mom was there. When I went into the hospital, I was told which room my dad was in. As I made my way, I could see the room from afar, but the person in there did not look like my dad. It was. He had on a neck brace, was covered with blood, and his hand was completely wrapped. In the emergency room, they took cat scans and x-rays of just about everything. Once they knew the results, they cleaned him all up. My mom and I were pretty happy about that. It turned out that he had a small nose fracture and his thumb had a compound fracture. All things considering, that was not bad. They kept him in the hospital overnight and did surgery on the thumb the next afternoon. This was a different hospital from the last incident and the experience was much better. My dad had a private room that was large and quiet. He came home the evening after the surgery with antibiotics and heavy pain medication. I was glad and grateful that my sister was able to come for the day.

Back at home, I spoke to some of the neighbors and got the full story as to what happened. My mom and dad both went out for a walk around the housing complex. My mom only goes a short distance, so she headed for home and my dad continued on to the mailbox. He would meet her back at the house and help her get up the steps. At the mailbox, my dad saw a neighbor and waved. Unfortunately, he did not see a cement parking block that was moved onto the sidewalk due to repaving of the road. He fell right over it. The neighbor saw the fall and said it was the worst thing she had ever seen. He landed on his hand and his face. She got some paper towels and tissues from her car and ran over to help him. She realized that would not be enough as he was bleeding profusely from his nose and thumb. She went to the closest house and the husband and wife came right out with some towels. The husband knew just what to do as he wrapped the dangling thumb with a wet cloth. One of the women called 911. My dad asked where my mom was – he knew she would be waiting for him – so one of the ladies went to house. My mom was sitting outside in her walker waiting for my dad, but knew that something had happened. The neighbor brought her to where the accident happened and the EMT’s were there working on him. Once he was stabilized and in the ambulance, my mom was able to talk with him. The neighbors and my mom headed back to the house where my mom called me. Another neighbor stayed with her and made sure she got some dinner. Another came over and took her to the hospital. Once we got home, a neighbor came over with some delicious home made chicken noodle soup. It was truly a team effort with half the housing complex involved in some way. What a blessing.

I took my dad to his regular doctor the day after he got home. The doctor – and everyone else – said it was incredible that at 85 years old my dad could take a fall like that and come out of it with minimal injuries. My dad reminded his doctor that he intends to live to 100 years old. The doctor agreed that he probably will. Evidently my dad put out his hand to catch his fall, so it took the brunt of the impact. It was his right hand, which is dominant, so he is struggling to do things left handed. I ate dinner last night left handed in solidarity with him. His hand swelled up, so we are keeping a close eye on that and his scrapes are healing up pretty nicely so far. He struggles getting a good night sleep, but is enjoying his pain medication. All in all, he is doing pretty good. My mom is exhausted from the ordeal, but doing OK too. She wrote some thank you notes to bring over to the neighbors and I made a couple of batches of cookies to add.

I Found God today in concerned and caring neighbors, family presence and prayers, knowledgeable and nurturing doctors and nurses, and mostly the miracle that my dad took such a nasty fall and was not hurt worse than he was.

To Be A Saint

Today as I was perusing social media, I saw that today in the Catholic church, we celebrate the Memorial of St. Clare. She has always interested me – mostly because I know she worked closely with St. Francis of Assisi. I wonder what it must have been like to make unpopular decisions, be counter cultural, and live only to do the will of God. Sometimes I feel like I don’t even know what God’s will is for me. I look up to the saints and the way they lived their lives. I feel like living to that extreme is completely out of reach. A friend of mine shared words of Pope Francis, “To be a saint is not a privilege for a few, but the vocation of everyone. Saints aren’t supermen and they weren’t born perfect. They are people who, before attaining glory in Heaven, lived a normal life, with joys and pains, struggles and hopes. But when they knew the love of God they felt it with all their hearts.” These words gave me so much comfort. I do know the love of God. He has lifted me up from difficult situations. I have realized improvements in my own attitudes and how I try to treat others. I am by no means perfect and have plenty of growing to do. And I know that when I am best connected to God by spending time in His presence, I make the best decisions and have inner peace and joy. I know I need to persevere and not get discouraged.

I Found God today in encouragement to keep striving for sainthood.

Love, Support, Prayers

Today I received an unexpected card and note from a far away friend. It was full of news and encouragement. I was touched most deeply by knowing that she prays for me often. It is heart warming and humbling.

I Found God today in love, support, and prayers from far away.

Needed to be in Church

This morning at church before the Mass started, I noticed a man with a long grayish ponytail come in and sit a few pews in front of us. He was wearing a black cut-off t-shirt with a motorcycle club on the back. When he arrived, he was greeted by some people who were already seated and had a space for him. There were lots of hugs, hand shaking, and pats on the back. A young man came over and sat next to him. More people arrived as part of the group and the hugging, hand shaking, and back patting started over each time. I was very curious about his story and could not help but observe what was happening. More than once, the man would be overcome with emotion and was sobbing into his bandana. At one point he actually left with one of the women following, but then he came back in a little while later. It seemed to me that his group was a mixture of people who went to church and those that did not or had not in quite some time. During some of the scripture readings and prayers he would nod his head in agreement. Sometimes he would look over at the young man as if he was making a point or looking for his reaction. When it came time for Holy Communion, most of the group made their way to the front of the church to receive, including the man. After he received the host, he went to the chalice that the deacon was holding. They had a little conversation and after receiving from the chalice, the deacon said a few words and patted him on the back. Of course, I never found out exactly what the story was. My parents and I talked about it after Mass and thought of potential scenarios. What I found most meaningful was that no matter what the circumstance, there was an event that brought this man to church – to God. He had a large group of people who were there supporting and loving him who had also made their way to church. Whatever was happening, the man was comfortable enough to be so emotional in that space – even though the majority of the church was composed of strangers. Church was the necessary place to be – God was the necessary connection to be made.

I Found God today in the comfort and openness that people feel in making their way to church in extreme situations – like making their way back home.

County Fair

Today my 2 sisters, brother-in-law, nephew, and I went to a local county fair. It had a very small town, family, true farm feel to it. One of my sisters and her husband now own a small mini-ranch themselves and are trying to gain all the knowledge they can before they begin getting animals. They took a long look at the chickens and were happy to be able to see some of the species they are thinking about getting. We also saw the ducks, geese, turkeys, bunnies, llamas, sheep, cows, and horses. Some of them were in their pens and others were out. My other sister has a very friendly demeanor and was always talking to those handling the animals and taking pictures. After we had our fried oreos, my nephew was determined to win a prize at one of the carnival games. We followed him as he perused the games to find just the right one – which he did. It was a basketball game with a small basketball and hoop. If you got 1 of 3 balls in the hoop, you won a prize. That is the one he decided to play. We all watched in anticipation. The first one bounced off the rim of the hoop as did the second. The third, however, went in. He chose a stuffed unicorn like the one in the movie Despicable Me. The carny guy made a big deal of it and as soon as it hit my nephew’s hands, he held it up and appropriately declared, “It’s So Fluffy!” He planned on giving it to his girlfriend. All in all, we had a pretty great day at the fair.

I Found God today in the people caring for their animals and enjoying the fun day.

Washing Lasagna Pans

I love preparing for and having celebrations. I like to see people enjoy themselves and each other without having to do a lot of work. Today I participated in my first volunteer opportunity at the church. I helped with a funeral luncheon. Now, you may not think of this as a celebration, but in fact it is. People come together who may not have seen each other for quite some time. In this case, the woman who passed away was 94 years old. Her and her husband had recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary a few months before. Her 96 year old husband was there just as spry as could be. The group chatted, shared memories, laughed and visited. It was nice to see them enjoying the food and the company. I had the pleasure of working with 5 ladies I just met who had a heart for serving. 3 of us were new, and we had a lot to learn – preparing, serving, and cleaning. To wrap things up, I ended up washing the dishes, including the pans from the lasagna dishes that other people donated for the meal. Tonight, my family got together to celebrate my brother’s and brother-in-law’s birthdays. My sister made lasagna and a salad freshly picked from her garden, so I did not have cook dinner. My brother-in-law’s favorite dessert is rice crispy treats. He turned 50, so I made a giant 50 out of rice crispy treats. My brother’s favorite dessert is ice cream, so I bought assorted flavors that we passed around. We had a great celebration and no one had to do a lot of work. And to wrap things up, I ended up washing the dishes, including the lasagna pan. I thought that was pretty funny.

I Found God today in being able to help people celebrate and seeing them enjoy themselves and one another.

The Newest Teacher

A young woman I know graduated from college a few years ago and has wanted to be a teacher. She has been working at a pre-school and the pictures I see of her with the kids there are precious. I feel she is truly gifted to work with them. The test required for teachers in the state she lives in has been a stumbling block for her as she struggles when she tests. A few months ago she took the test one more time and passed it. Then came the next hard part – finding a job. She applied and interviewed for one in particular that seemed to be perfect, but did not get the job. Everyone encouraged her not to loose hope and to keep the faith. When she was in high school, she came across the scripture Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—says the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.” It is still the one she clings to. Her mom told me today that she had a job interview at a Christian K-12 school. I said some prayers for her right away and when I thought of her during the day. I found out later that she did get the job – and the school classes begin next week. God cut it pretty close, but He came through.

I Found God today in a young woman receiving a job that she has been striving for.

An Old Picture

Today I took my mom to get her haircut. The hairdresser used to cut my hair and my kids’ hair about 20 years ago before I moved away. It is always fun to see her as she always has interesting things to say. She loves my kids, especially the younger one and tells stories about him to her other customers. Today she had a surprise for me. She pulled out a picture that was taken the last time my sons and I were at her salon before we moved. When I looked at it, I remembered having it taken so she could remember us. It brought back many memories and more stories of our visits there. Little did we know, I would be back there in person quite a few years later. She wanted me to keep the picture, so I took it home. That was very thoughtful as I knew how much it meant to her. I will make a copy of it so she can have it back. I can’t wait to show it to my kids.

I Found God today in fun memories and thoughtfulness of a long time friend.

Invitation to Serve

A while ago, the church had a ministry fair of sorts. Some of the ministries were represented by tables of information and sign up sheets. I restrained myself from the youth ministry and religious education section because I knew the commitment would be more than I can give at this time. I came across the ministry that provides meals and receptions for those attending funerals. I thought that would be a good match at this point. I cook a lot now, so I might as well share it. I chatted with the people at the table and signed up on the clipboard. I did not hear anything back and wondered if I ever would. Honestly I forgot about it – until today. I got a phone call to see if I can help prepare a small reception for a funeral on Friday. I said I could and got the details. I very much look forward to my first volunteer opportunity at the parish.

I Found God today in an invitation to serve.

Swim Down

My daughter-in-law is very, very ready to give birth to the little one she has been carrying. I talked to her tonight as she told me how she is doing. It seems like it has been a long waiting process and a lot has happened in a few short months. We are all ready to meet the little girl that we have been doting over even while she is still in the womb. My daughter-in-law told me that her two older boys are making a “Finding Nemo” reference as they tell the baby to “swim down” so she can come out into the world. I thought that was hysterical and we laughed and laughed.

I Found God today in the humor of little boys.
