Sister Talk

My mom and her sister keep in touch via email and my social media posts. It has been a very long time since they talked on the phone. The last time they did, both of them had a very hard time hearing the other. We had been thinking about giving my aunt a call and trying it again, so this morning we made it happen. After my aunt got her hearing aids in and made some adjustments on her phone, it went pretty well. I only had to repeat a few things for my mom, and her sister heard much better than before. They had a nice long talk and got caught up on family happenings. It was such a blessing. As much as we can share information, pictures, and videos, there is nothing like talking with one another.

I Found God today in my mom and her sister’s conversation.

Missed Her

My daughter in law and I planned on getting together last week, but it snowed and the roads were too bad. We rescheduled for today and it snowed again. However, she was already out taking the kids to school, which started late, so we did meet up. I was proud of her for driving on the not yet cleared roads. We had some brunch and visited. We talked about serious things and funny things. I realized just how long it had been since we sat down and talked and how much I missed her. It was such a blessing to get together.

I Found God today in my relationship with my daughter in law.

Our Tech Guy

I had a memory pop up today on social media of a post and photo I shared 9 years ago. It was when my son was in college and was a thrower on the track team. It was difficult travelling to far away places to watch his meets. I was excited when I learned that one of them would be live streamed. That was a rarity at the time. This is what my post said in part:

” . . .The camera work and commentating was done by college students who enjoyed the running races and knew little about the throwing events. Those events happened down at one end of the track. My son texted me to let me know he was getting ready for his turn. I called my sister who is in another state and we watched together. The camera followed the runners, so would sweep by the throwing area very quickly. It took a keen eye to spot my son for split seconds at a time. But at one point, the camera actually came to a halt just as it was my son’s turn. He threw the weight, pumped his fist, and did a triumphant leap. He later told me that it was his best throw so far. The shotput event was later, and I called my parents so we could watch it together. It was even more challenging to see him this time. But my dad figured out how to pause the stream and did so just as it was my son’s turn. Then he took a picture of the screen to commemorate the day.”

Dad was always our tech guy. We could count on him to figure things out. It was a good memory.

I Found God today remembering how blessed I was with my techy dad.

Galentines

The ladies in our community go to lunch once a month. My mom has thought about going, but not committed. Today seemed like the perfect opportunity. We met about 14 others in the restaurant. My mom knew a couple, as did I. They were all very warm and friendly and invited my mom into their conversations. She did great. Later in the afternoon, my son’s girlfriend dropped by and brought some baked goods. We had a really nice visit with her and the treats were delicious. Then my mom received an unexpected box. It was some puzzles sent by a friend. My mom got teary eyed as she read the thoughtful note. It was a lovely valentine’s day with chocolate to top it off.

I Found God today in many thoughtful ladies.

Faith and Proof

Tonight my mom and I watched the rest of the movie, “Song of Bernadette”. It contained such a beautiful quote by St. Thomas Aquinas, “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.”

I Found God today in faith.

Super Bowl Reflection

My mom and I went to my son’s house for a while to watch some of the Super Bowl this afternoon. It was good to get out of the house, see family, and eat football food. As I watched the game and the commercials, I was reminded of the reflection we read in “Jesus Calling” this morning. It said in part “…Modern man seeks his positive focus elsewhere: in sports, sensations, acquiring new possessions. Advertising capitalizes on the longing of people for a positive focus on their lives. I (God) planted that longing in human souls, knowing that only I could fully satisfy it. Delight yourself in Me; let Me become the desire of your heart.” Perhaps it was written knowing that someday, it would be read on Super Bowl Sunday. How very fitting.

I Found God today in a perfect reflection for Super Bowl Sunday.

Our Lady of Lourdes Connections

Today is the actual Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. We talked about it this morning and my mom said she wanted to watch the movie, “The Song of Bernadette” from 1943. She said it was her favorite movie when she was younger. Before we watched the movie, we turned on EWTN. The station was showing the live Mass and celebration in Lourdes. After Mass, they all processed to the grotto. My mom and I remembered being there and seeing the statue, the stone wall, and the tower of candles. I remembered not only the tangible environment, but the spirituality of the place that I felt, but didn’t completely understand as a child. Then we watched about half the movie as that was about all the TV time my mom could take. Today was also the 1 year anniversary of my dad’s funeral and burial. I reflected on all these connections our family has with Our Lady of Lourdes and am feeling particularly humbled and blessed.

I Found God today in our family connections with Our Lady of Lourdes.

Remembering Lourdes

Last night before bed, I came across a video of the pastor I worked for, who once again spoke to my heart. He talked about the upcoming Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick, which is on Saturday. He told the story of the young girl, now known as St. Bernadette, who lived in a small town in France and had several visions of a beautiful lady in a white gown with a blue sash. The woman identified herself as the Immaculate Conception. This statement is what made the skeptics finally believe that she was, in fact, the Blessed Mother of Jesus Christ. The grotto where the apparitions took place became a spring of flowing water. Soon, people were healed from this water. Lourdes is now a place of pilgrimage when millions of sick travel each year. My mother took me there when I was around the same age as Bernadette during her apparitions. I had juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and my mother was hoping for a cure. It was an incredible experience that I will never forget as I was immersed in a giant tub of the flowing water. While I wasn’t healed immediately, shortly after our visit, I was aware that I would be. As time went on, the once debilitating disease slowly subsided. I still have some stiffness, but it is a reminder to me of where I was, where I could be now, and how merciful God is. Our Diocese celebrated the World Day of the Sick today with Anointing of the Sick at Mass. I took my mom and she was thrilled to be anointed and to have the bishop come up to her after Mass and shake her hand. We also received some holy water from Lourdes. Some 50 years ago, my mom and I brought home some water from Lourdes. I have never run out, and have always had plenty to share with others.

I Found God today in His healing presence.

Thoughtful Prayers

We had quite a pile of mail that we started going through the other day. In it, we came across a prayer card from a friend. It was so thoughtful and I felt particularly blessed.

I found God today in a thoughtful friend.

Apostolic Blessing

The other day when I shared pictures of our plants, a friend noticed a picture on the wall. It was a certificate of an Apostolic Blessing that my mom and dad received in 1974 from Pope Paul VI who is now a saint. I thought I knew what it was for, but I’m glad I asked my mom about it, because I had it wrong. She said that we lived in Germany at the time. Both she and my dad were involved in organizing a new children’s religious education program at the church. Evidently the pastor requested the Pope’s blessing for those who contributed to the program. My mom said they were very surprised and humbled. It meant so much to them, that it is framed and hanging on the wall, and has been for almost 50 years.

I Found God today in an Apostolic Blessing that my parents received.
