Grateful For Sister

Today is my sister’s birthday. I am especially grateful for her today. She was away when mom and I ended up with COVID and stayed away for a little longer at my insistence. She knew how much I was struggling though, so she came back to stay at the house, wearing her facemask the whole time. Basically she risked getting COVID to help me and our mom. I was super grateful for that. But I think what I am most grateful for is the way she makes my mom laugh. I know I can be too serious, and it is a blessing to hear my mom laugh so much with my sister.

I Found God today in my sister.

The Big Walk

Mom and I went for a walk today. I mean – a real walk. About 4 times further than I had been in weeks. At first my legs retaliated, but I insisted and kept going. It was actually hard to keep up with my mom, which was very different for me. At the end, I did need to rest and hydrate, but felt accomplished. The sunshine and brisk air were wonderful to the senses. Tonight, I’m pretty tired, but am reminding myself that I am getting better and grateful to God for that.

I Found God today in a wonderful walk.

Back At It

My mom’s friend came over today after weeks of not visiting. My mom wore the fancy music lounge pants that she got for Christmas. After a couple practice rounds, they played the Christmas songs. I loved it. It was so good to have a friend over and to hear them play together again.

I Found God today in the sound of friends playing music together.

Prepare Ye

For the past week or so, we have been talking about the movie, “Godspell”. We always loved the music and sang a couple of the tunes. Neither mom nor I have the stamina to get to church, so we went downstairs to the big TV. The Mass we landed on was the one from the parish I used to work for. The Gospel reading told about John the Baptist identifying Jesus as the Son of God. John would preach the need to prepare for His arrival. When we got to the homily, the pastor started singing in his beautiful, boisterous voice, “Pre-pare Ye the way of the Lord…” from the musical “Godspell”. I love how God gets our attention. The priest then talked about how important it is for us to continue to prepare our hearts for Jesus’ coming. We will, in fact, meet Him face to face – either at our death or at his 2nd coming.

I Found God today in a beautiful connection.

Still Needed Rest

I was looking forward to feeling better and having more energy today. Unfortunately, a migraine knocked me back down. After a 2 hour nap, I started feeling better. I was so grateful that my sister is here taking care of things so I can rest when I need to.

I Found God today in my sister’s help.

Almost Back

Yesterday our friend came over to stay with my mom. We hadn’t seen her – or anyone other than my sister – in a month. I got dressed in real clothes and decided to be brave and do a grocery store run. First I thought I should make sure the 2 cars in the garage started. They did, so I let them run for a bit. I decided to drive the easy, comfortable car instead of the SUV we take to the cabin. I wasn’t sure if my weak, noodle legs would hold up. Off I went to the store. It sounds like more than it actually was. The grocery store is only 1 1/2 miles away and I placed a pick up order, so all I had to do was drive there, let them put the food in the trunk, and drive home. I also did a drive through and picked up lunch. When I arrived home, I brought in and put away many of the groceries. It felt good to get out a little and to have a friend over in real life to visit with. I think that jump started my brain into thinking I’ve been sick long enough and it’s time to get back to life. Today I had even more energy and did many of my “normal” things. Even though it’s taking longer than I would like, I am very glad that both mom and I are getting back to where we were.

I Found God today feeling better.

To Boast of Miracles

I listened to the Gospel reading this morning. It was the story of Jesus healing a man with leprosy and asking him not to tell anyone but the priests to see that he was clean and able to be part of the community once again. The man who was healed could not keep it to himself. This begs the question – what if it were me? What would I do? Yesterday a friend shared how God spoke to him through music all day. From there, other people shared how they recently had a “God Sighting”. Another friend has shared openly the miracles she has experienced in the past couple weeks. I, myself, was given an opportunity today to speak to a friend about the Lourdes holy water. When something amazing happens, it’s hard to keep it to ourselves. Even though, if it’s miraculous, we may feel awkward sharing it. But people need to hear of the goodness and love God has for each one of us. To finish the night, my sister and I have been binging The Chosen series before we start watching the new season. Tonight included the story of – yes – the man healed of leprosy. God is always trying to get our attention.

I Found God today in a reminder to keep sharing faith stories.

Jenga

My mom has started to get bored. After all, we have done pretty much nothing for almost 4 weeks as we continue to recover from COVID. I have had even less energy than her. She has been doing a lot of reading, puzzle making, playing on her iPad, and playing the piano. But it has been wearing on her eyes and she has been wanting something else to do. Tonight after dinner, my mom spotted the Jenga game and said she had been wanting to play. So we got it out and she and my sister set it up. She wondered if she would even be able to play as she is so shaky from the Parkinson’s, but we just went ahead and started. She did great. We all did. Until that one last move made the tower unstable. Of course, my mom was up next. She studied the structure and even found a loose plank. But alas, the tower fell when she tried to pull it out. We all laughed. It felt so good to play and laugh.

I Found God today in play and laughter.

Outside Benefits

My mom and I were happy to be able to sit outside and soak up some sunshine for a while again today. The other day when we were out, she remembered when she learned about how good it is for you to be outside. She was in 8th grade. She attended a Catholic school, but they collaborated with the local public school. The class would go over to the public school once a week for Home Economics. During that course they learned how to take care of a baby. They were taught that babies should get 10 minutes of sunshine every day. Part of the work was to create a scrapbook using pictures from magazines and such depicting what to do. My mom remembered vividly the picture she used of a cute little baby girl in a pink dress, enjoying the outdoors. I am always amazed at the things she remembers. I also think it’s great how science supports and explains many of the things she learned so long ago. And I loved to hear how the schools worked together for the good of the children and the community.

I Found God today in my mom’s childhood story.

Another Miracle

Last week I shared a story about a dog hero. Only a couple of days later, my friend was in distress because that same dog was now in the emergency room himself and the vet was only giving him a 5% chance of survival. I knew this tragedy was too much for my friend. She put out the call for prayers as did I. That afternoon the dog came through his emergency surgery and they increased his chance to 20%. The dog continued to recover and surprise everyone – especially the vet who called him their miracle dog. Only 2 days after the ordeal, he was able to go home. My friend said he was all full of energy and went straight for the toys. She shared a picture of the 2 of them and their joy radiated through the screen. This is what she said about her recent experiences: “… it is so overwhelming you cannot comprehend the gift you have been given. Just so people know it can happen. The human mind is not equipped to handle a miracle. You just have to feel it…”

I Found God today in the power of prayer and God’s miraculous healing.
