A Different Kind of Thanksgiving

We all knew Thanksgiving would be different this year and honestly I was a little emotional going into it. My son and his wife hosted the meal as it would be easier on them both. I made the pumpkin pie and apple crisp, my sister put together the charcuterie board, and my brother provided the wine. When we arrived at the house, the turkey was in the oven and everyone was up and about. The house was decorated for Christmas as my son wanted to make sure that was done before his surgery. We enjoyed our snacks and visited for a while. Then my son had to go lay down and rest his back. My granddaughter was ready to set the table, so we got out the tablecloths and dishes. She decided on the seating arrangements and used the napkins as place cards. As we were working on that, my daughter in law started getting the rest of the side dishes together. She did great for a while, then her ankle started hurting. My brother and sister sat her down so she could put her foot up while they took directions. When the turkey was just about ready, my other son and his fiancee arrived with more food. None of us were particularly confident when it came to making the gravy and my son said that his fiancee made a delicious batch. So, she made the gravy. Meanwhile, my son cut the turkey while teaching my grandson how it was done. My other grandson shuttled food to the table. Someone got my son who was resting and we all sat down at our assigned seats for a delicious meal. As we ate, we went around the table and talked about what we were grateful for as directed by my granddaughter. It was a different kind of Thanksgiving without my parents, and the atmosphere was different with both my son and his wife recovering from surgery. To me if felt like no one was really responsible for the success of the whole day. Instead, everyone was. Each person had a hand in preparing the day and the meal. People just pitched in where there was a need. It was a little hectic, but in a good, joyful way. I felt very blessed for all the loving relationships and for the cooperation, laughter, and gratitude that was shared.

I Found God today in an active, loving thanksgiving day.

The Pie

It was my task to make the pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving this year. It is not something I have done on a regular basis. Today was the day to prepare it. I looked up recipes in a couple of books and found that my mom had made notes in her old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. It warmed my heart. I kept the recipe out and looked at a couple more. In the end, I followed my mom’s recipe with just a bit of tweaking. For whatever reason, I usually combine a couple of recipes to get the flavors I would like. The pie turned out great. I kind of felt like my mom was present, keeping me on the right track and it was good to remember cooking with her.

I Found God today cooking with my mom’s assistance.

Amazing Athletes

My brother and I visited both the Olympic Training Center and the Olympic Paralympic Museum today. I learned more about the incredible commitment it takes for a person to become an Olympic athlete. My awe, appreciation, and respect for those men and women grew even more. Most of them overcame and beat tremendous odds to become amazing champions. There was one quote on a wall dedicated to some of the Paralympic medalists that struck me. It was, “We are all only able-bodied temporarily. Sooner or later everyone’s body breaks down. That puts me ahead of the game because I already know how to live with part of me being out of order.”  It was a quote from Candace Cable who was a Paralympian in track and field, alpine skiing, and Nordic skiing from 1980-2006. At the age of 21, she was injured in a car accident and lost the use of her legs. Initially she struggled and became addicted to heroin. Once she completed rehabilitation, she changed direction and found sports. Not only was she a Paralympian, she also won the Boston Marathon 6 times in the wheelchair division. Hers is just one of the incredibly stories of hope that I found to be truly inspiring.

I Found God today in amazing athletes.

Teamwork

I took my daughter in law to her physical therapy appointment this morning and when we got back to her house, she was hurting pretty badly. She took some ibuprofen and sat down in the recliner and put her foot up. My son came in from resting in his bed. He is still recovering from his back surgery. The two of them were quite a pair. She can’t be on her feet too long. He can’t bend or lift. But they are managing. It is a difficult time for them, but they are doing their best to be patient with themselves and one another. When I was there I did some cooking and cleaning. The kids pitched in. Especially now, teamwork is a blessing.

I Found God today in teamwork.

Breath and Beauty

My brother arrived last night and will stay all week to celebrate Thanksgiving. Today we decided to take a trip up to the cabin. He has not been up there for several years. It was a beautiful day for a drive. While we were there, we just enjoyed the peace, serenity, and beauty of the place. We reminisced a bit about the cabin and my parents. My brother poked around a bit in the nooks and crannies. He usually has trouble with the altitude, but he drank a lot of water and some Liquid IV. It seemed to work as he didn’t get dizzy or a really bad headache. We were very grateful for that. We had a very enjoyable drive and visit.

I Found God today enjoying a day with my brother and seeing him feeling well.

Extreme Courage

Yesterday I was blessed to go to my granddaughter’s voice lesson and listen to her sing. She has been taking lessons for about a year now as singing is truly her passion. It became evident when she was a toddler that God had given her this talent. Her perfect pitch and musicality is truly amazing. Before she started lessons, she was shy and didn’t want anyone to watch her sing. So she had me in tears during the lesson as she looked directly at me and sang the song, “What Was I Made For”. Her teachers have given her more confidence and courage to share her wonderful gift.

Today I went to a craft fair at a local church. There I saw a woman who I met when I was taking a Biblical course. We chatted for a bit and I told her of my mother’s death. Her husband who was with her said that his sister took care of his parents for 10 years as well. He said there was no way that he would have been able to do what his sister did. He felt that you have to have extreme courage in order to be a caregiver. I had never thought of it that way and it touched my heart. I was grateful for his encouragement.

I Found God today in extreme courage.

Family Care

Two years ago, my son had surgery on his back to relieve the pressure from a bulging disc. At that time, the doctor saw that the disc just above was showing the same problem. He figured he would see my son back again in a few months. My son made it as long as he could. He had another surgery this morning. My grandson took him while I got the two younger kids to school and my daughter in law to physical therapy. My grandson kept his mom updated and informed of all the details and doctor’s instructions. We were all amazed that the surgery took only about forty-five minutes and my son was home by lunchtime. He said he was feeling pretty good. My grandson was a great nurse as he helped him get settled into bed and got his space set up for him. After getting some rest, my son even got up and walked around a bit. My daughter in law walked around and up and down the stairs quite a bit today. She was pretty worn out after making chicken Parmesan for dinner as she promised her son that she would make it for him. When I left, she was off her feet, my son was napping, and my grandson was happy to be of service. It was a blessing to know the surgery was successful, to see my daughter in law starting to get back on her feet, and to see the care my grandson gives to his family.

I Found God today in family care.

Faith Not Fear

I listened to the mediation from Jeff Cavins on the Hallow app this morning. He shared a great acrostic for the word FEAR: False Evidence Appearing Real. He was explaining the Gospel of the day. The Bible story was that of a wealthy man sharing some of his wealth with those who worked for him, expecting they would give him a return on the investment. Two of the people did, one did not as he was afraid of the tyrant. He didn’t even do the minimum by putting the money safely in a bank. Instead he hid away, in fear of what could happen. And so it can be for me. As I try to figure out what to do next, I can think of all kinds of scary scenarios in which terrible things happen. But that’s not reality. It does me well to catch those thoughts and give them to God. Then, go and do the next right thing. I appreciated the reminder of how big, good, and generous our God is. I pray not to fear the next step, but to take it in faith.

I Found God today reminded of his goodness and omnipotence.

Music Donation

It was a very good thing that my sisters and I meticulously sifted through my mom’s music. Today the president of one of the music organizations that my mom was involved with came over. We chatted a bit about our commonalities. He teaches in the music department at the same local college where my dad taught for 20 years. The gentleman said they would love the donation of music for the school. I showed him the filing cabinet with the rest of my mom’s music and invited him to take what he thought he could put to good use. To my surprise, he was happy to have everything. At one point, I panicked just a bit and pulled out the folder of super old music that my mom had written her name on. It was her maiden name, so it was music that she would have acquired over 70 years ago. I put the folder aside and helped pack up 4 boxes of music and reference books. The gentleman was so happy to receive the donation. It was more difficult for me than anticipated, but I knew my mom and dad would both be happy that the materials would be put to good use at the college.

I Found God today donating my mom’s music and knowing that it would be put to good use.

Walking

My daughter in law had her appointment with her surgeon today. He was very pleased with the progress and healing from her ankle surgery several weeks ago. He traded her stiff boot for a fancy lace up brace. And he encouraged her to try walking now without a cane or any assistance device. She took his advice and was surprised as to how good it felt. She walked all around the house in the afternoon as well as up and down the stairs. It was wonderful to see her walking with confidence. Everyone was so happy.

I Found God today seeing my daughter in law’s healing and walking.
