Welcoming Party

Every time I visit my dad in his memory care community, I learn a little more about compassion. As my mom and I were leaving today, there were a group of four women together – two in wheelchairs and two sitting with walkers. I recognized three of them, but one I had not seen before. As we were approaching, one of the ladies asked if she was new there. The woman replied that she was. They asked, “Brand new here?” She said “Yes, brand new.” One woman extended her hand and said, “Welcome! It’s nice to meet you!” The new resident took her hand and gave it a slow shake as they held on to one another. The scene warmed my heart and reminded me that no matter what capabilities or infirmities people have, we all desire that human connection, and each of us is able to offer that connection.

I Found God today in a beautiful connection.

Tree Trimming

Today my son and grandchildren came over to help us get out the Christmas tree and decorations. Everyone played a part. The guys did the heavy lifting, set up the tree, and got all the lights working. My granddaughter helped my son put the tinsel garland on. My grandson, my mom and I put on most of the ornaments. We told the stories about those that were most meaningful and we all enjoyed reminiscing. We laughed. We listened to Christmas music. We danced. We got a little more prepared for Christmas and I was grateful for the help. It was a wonderful day.

I Found God today having fun trimming the Christmas tree.

Meaningful Mail

Today I received two special pieces of mail. One was a magnetic bookmark that says, “Those who hope in the Lord will soar on wings like eagles.” from Isaiah 40:31. A friend just thought I would like it. The other was included in my aunt’s Christmas card. It was a story from her local newspaper. It was kind of a complicated story about one man who recently found that his son had cancer. By several intertwined circumstances, he ended up going to a show and sitting right next to the one person who understood his angst and was able to bring him peace. I feel blessed that these people thought of me enough that they would take the time to send me these little tokens of encouragement.

I Found God today in meaningful mail.

Peaceful Scripture

Tonight before bed, I read this scripture that brought peace to my heart:

1 Thessalonians 5:23
May the god of peace make you perfect in holiness. May he preserve you whole and entire, spirit, soul, and body, irreproachable at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I Found God today in a peaceful scripture.

Windsday

When my mom and I went out and about this morning, I wondered if it was a good idea as the weather wasn’t great, but it was supposed to get worse later in the day. I should have listened closer to that inner voice. We were out in the worst windstorm I have ever experienced. We drove through several dust storms and got pelted. On the highway, we passed a sign warning of a closed lane ahead. As we approached we saw a semi truck that was overturned and part way down a hill. Several other semis had pulled over by walls to protect themselves. We came upon another that was stopped on a bridge, but it was still moving. The wind was blowing so hard that it was pushing the trailer. It was about to topple. We finally got off the highway at our exit and stopped at the stop light. Our car was rocking and the traffic lights were flying all around. I was praying they wouldn’t come off. My mom was supposed to have a doctor’s appointment, but I called them and told them she wasn’t coming. As we were turning onto our street, a lane was blocked because there were workers clearing a tree that had fallen. We got home, pulled into the garage, and closed the door behind us before we got out of the car. I was so glad to be home safe and sound.

I Found God today staying safe in a treacherous drive.

Climbing the Mountain

In my prayers this morning was Isaiah 2:2-5 which includes,

“Come, let us climb the Lord’s mountain,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
That he may instruct us in his ways,
and we may walk in his paths.”

I thought of my dad’s obsession yesterday with climbing a mountain and thought perhaps this was the mountain he was thinking of. It made me chuckle and get teary eyed at the same time.

I Found God today in a scriptural connection.

Christmas Pageant

Tonight the activity coordinators at my dad’s facility planned a Christmas Pageant. Their intent was to have the residents wear their dressiest clothes and have them walk the red carpet. My parents attended many formals – especially when my dad was in the military, so we thought this would be a nice evening for them. I found a very nice black dress with a sparkly jacket in my closet for my mom. We found my dad’s suit in his closet. The pants were a couple inches too big, so I put a couple of pins in the sides and called it good. When we arrived at the community, we were hopeful to have my dad go along with the idea as everyone said he was in a good mood. However, when we talked to him about getting his suit on, he thought it was ridiculous since he was going for a hike up and down the mountain. Several people encouraged him, but he was having none of it. He saw that my mom was dressed up and said we should go ahead to the party but he didn’t want to. Then our favorite caregiver came into the scene. They clicked from the very beginning. I don’t know how she does what she does, but my dad responds to her like no one else. I am very grateful for her. She got him in the suit – well most of it anyways – as my mom, sister and I waited in the dining room. He was handsome and happy when he returned and we joined the party. They had the residents do a little red carpet walk – or roll as the case may be – and some showed off their talents. One gentleman sang along with “You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog”. Then a woman had to tell everyone that she met Elvis Presley and shook his hand. There was a sing along led by the residents choir. We visited with some residents and family members and found interesting connections. Everyone got a trophy and the ladies received tiaras. My mom really enjoyed the evening and my dad did as well once he got going. It warmed my heart to see them together all dressed up and having a good time at a special event.

I Found God today seeing my parents enjoying a special event.

Philosophy

For my bible class, I have bee reading “Three Philosophies of Life”, by Peter Kreeft. It takes you through three books of the bible and what they say about the meaning of life. Ecclesiastes begins by daring to ask the question, “What is life all for anyways?” According to the author, it’s all futile. Nothing is gained, nothing is lost but life itself in the end. Everyone and everything has the same outcome – death. Somewhat depressing. The next chapter is on Job whose suffering was intense. And though he continued to pray, he challenged God for the meaning and purpose of suffering in life. Finally we come to Song of Songs, which is the book I’m studying this week and am happy to have reached. Song of Song answers the questions of the first two books. LOVE. Life is about love. We are created in love, by love Himself, to be loved by Him, to love Him, and to love those around us. Life is one big love story between us and God. I have never delved into reading philosophy, but I have very much enjoyed reading this particular book along with the scriptures. It requires thoughtful consideration and pondering and I appreciate that.

I Found God today pondering the meaning of life.

Much Good News

There was a lot of positive excitement in the family today. My younger son registered for his first power lifting competition and had his weigh in today. He made the weight he intended and was pretty excited. My older son found out he got a job he was hoping for. It sounds like it is a perfect opportunity for him. My older sister received a big order for her amazing toffee, just in time for Christmas. And my younger sister and husband closed on the sale of their farm today. They were able to get everything accomplished on time despite medical setbacks and even taught the new owners how to care for the chickens. This sale happened at just the right time for them. That was a lot of good news in one day and I thanked God after each one. I love how He shows His love for us and reminds us that He’s still looking over us. I’m still thanking Him now.

I Found God today as He reminded me He is still looking over us.

Another Plan Gone Astray

I had a few hours to myself today and planned on running lots of errands. However, I got a call the other day that the dentist would see my dad this morning to replace a lost crown. So, when our friend came over to stay with my mom, I headed up to my dad’s. I stayed through his dentist appointment and then got him tucked in for a nap. I only had time to make one stop on the way home as it was on the way. Last week, I talked with my neighbor about decorating the small pine tree in our yard that we can both see. I bought some lights and he was going to get an extension cord. Neither of us had been able to get together to do it. When we talked the other day, I told him if I wasn’t able to get out there and do it today, I was going to just wait until next year. When I was on my way home today, I was wondering how I was going to get everything accomplished. I decided I would need to let go of things that weren’t really that necessary – specifically decorating the little tree. Just then, my neighbor called. He had been getting a few more decorations put out and said he had the extension cord and would be happy to string the lights. I told him where they were and he stopped at the house and picked them up. By the time I got home, it was all done. At dinner time, we turned off the dining room light and lit the advent candles. We ate by the candlelight and the glow of twinkling Christmas lights from the window. It may seem like a small thing, but I was so grateful that my neighbor was so thoughtful and seeing the tree lit really made me happy.

I Found God today in a generous neighbor and the beauty of Christmas lights.
