Mom’s Prayer

Today I visited a friend who has cancer and his wife. When I got back home, my mom and I questioned if it is harder for the one who is ill, or for the other who watches their loved one go through an illness. The latter can feel like there is nothing they can do for sick person – except pray. This led us to talk about praying in times of sickness. My mother says she doesn’t pray for healing. She knows God could heal her, but she said at her age if she was healed from Parkinson’s, she would just get something else anyways. She said she prays for God’s will to be done and trusts that it will be for good. I have learned that my best prayer is for God to change my heart to conform with His will. I do want His will to be done in my life and my loved ones because I know it will be for the best, but at the same time I would really like things to go the way I want them to. So, praying to change my heart and my desires to God’s is much more effective.

I Found God today talking with my mom about prayer.

Miniature Problems

Tonight on the news I saw a story about some veterans who were able to take a ride in an old World War 1 airplane. They were all in their 80’s. In the interview, one woman who actually piloted the same kind of airplane commented how different things are when you’re high above the city. She said everything looks so neat and clean. The people are so small, miniature size, and so are your personal problems. She was looking at it from a different perspective, which is what I think we need to do sometimes as well.

I Found God today looking at problems from a different perspective.

Right Place, Right Time

My mom’s friend came over today for their weekly visit and piano duets. They were working on a particular difficult piece of music. My mom apologized for getting lost a couple of times and talked about how challenging it was. My mom’s friend replied that it was ok and it was really just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. I laughed and remarked how that is true for life in general. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time. I commended my mom’s friend on her wisdom.

I Found God today in an unexpected, somewhat humorous and profound statement.

Love Sisters

My mom’s sister lives very far away. With the difficulty they have hearing combined with the time change from here to there, it is always a challenge for them to talk on the phone. But, the other day my aunt sent some photos of her and her first great-grandchild, so my mom was determined to get in touch with her. When we called, she wasn’t home. Fortunately, she called back and it was at an opportune time. My mom and her sister had a good conversation. Even though they both struggle to hear and understand on the phone, it seemed to be working well for both of them. As problematic as it is for my mom to talk on the phone, I was so glad that she was able to have a good visit with her sister today.

I Found God today as my mom was able to have a nice conversation with her sister on the phone.

Most of the Family

This Father’s Day, we had quite a group of family at the house to celebrate – both my sisters, my brother, my son, and my nephew. My other brother who lives in another state was the only sibling missing, but he sent chocolates and goodies and had a long Facetime with my dad. It was a typical get together with everyone pitching in to cook and clean up, included lots of laughter, and lots of love and appreciation. My dad was very grateful for the day and thanked everyone often for everything.

I Found God today celebrating my dad together with lots of family.

Facing Temptation

This morning I read the meditation from Dynamic Catholic, “Temptations will be with us for our entire life. However, their presence or absence is no indication of personal holiness; how we deal with them is.” Richard J Hauser, SJ. This quote really struck me on a couple different levels. First is the reminder that regardless of how “well” I think I am doing, temptations are going to continue to be with me. I shouldn’t be surprised or discouraged when it rears it’s ugly head. Instead, I should anticipate or even expect that I will be challenged. And second, that no one is excluded from this allure – even Jesus Himself was tempted. But Jesus also showed us how to deal with the issue. When He was tempted, He used the Word of God and prayer to remedy the situation. For me, that means I need to be educated in Scripture, know the truth of God’s promises, stand firm in faith, and ask God to help me find my way out. It’s a lot, so I will pray for the help to simply remember these things.

I Found God today in a reminder of how to deal with temptation.

Extreme Laughter

Today was my nephew’s birthday. He, my sister, and my son came over for dinner. We laughed so hard that I felt I had done hundreds of sit-ups. The best part was that we laughed about nothing – and everything. It felt great.

I Found God today in extreme laughter.

So Far, So Good

A friend of mine received his first chemotherapy treatment a couple days ago. I visited with him tonight and was pleasantly surprised to see how well he was feeling. He looked good and was energetic. He even played a few rounds of golf with his son this morning. I had shared a bottle of Lourdes water with him. He has been blessing himself with it and is sure it is helping. I’m sure too.

I Found God today as my friend is responding well to chemotherapy so far.

Grandma Grandson Duet

My dad was not home tonight and I had a prayer group to attend, so my son came over to be with my mom, or “grandma sit”. My mom babysat for him when he was a toddler and even brought him to his first music lessons at that age. My son continued to pursue music and still sings, plays the keyboard and assorted guitars. When I got home, they said they had to show me what they did while I was away. Then they both sat at the piano. They played “The Entertainer” as a duet. My mom said that she had been thinking all afternoon that they had never played a duet together and that is what they should do when he came over. It warmed my heart.

I Found God today in my mom and son’s duet.

Respectful Waitress

Today we went to lunch at an Italian restaurant to celebrate my parent’s friend’s 88th birthday. She is so sweet and very soft spoken. The waitress was so considerate, helpful, and attentive. She explained everything on the menu and helped the woman pick out the best dish for her. When we finished our lunch, she packed up the leftover box for the woman. Then she brought out and served a beautiful and delicious birthday treat. Going out to eat with my older people is always hit or miss. Will they be comfortable, able to hear one another and enjoy the menu? But mostly, how will they be treated? The waitress at the restaurant today was the perfect balance of being considerate and helpful while being respectful.

I Found God today in a considerate and respectful waitress.
