Purple Booties

Knowing that it was going to be very frigid weather here, my brother got some purple rubber booties to protect his dog’s paws. This morning he got her all layered up with a shirt, coat, and the new purple booties. Before they headed out, she walked all around lifting her feet way up off the ground. If she could have gotten all 4 paws in the air at the same time, she would have. It was hysterical to watch. Once she got outside, she was fine.

I Found God today having a good laugh first thing in the morning.

Almost There

It is a snowy day here, so my mom, brother, and I spent some time with my dad this morning before the roads got too slippery. We’re not sure if we will be able to make it back tomorrow, and since my dad is due to come home on Wednesday, we got some last minute tips and advice from the doctor, therapists, and case manager. They have all been so great, encouraging, and positive. They have kept us informed every step of the way and always asking what they can do for us. Even though patients are in and out of there all the time, those who worked with my dad treated all of us very personally – not as just another problem coming through to be solved. It has been a long road, but the people in the rehab facility have done amazing work.

I Found God today in amazing rehab workers.

Solitary Sacred Space

I recorded Mass again on EWTN this morning and brought my computer to the rehab so we could watch with my dad. When my mom and I arrived, he had just finished a therapy and the Eucharistic ministers were in his room. We were glad we made it in time to receive Communion. We then all went down to the end of the narrow hallway where there is a large floor to ceiling window with a beautiful view of the mountains. Dad said we could overlook God’s Creation. We set up the computer on the small table there with just enough room for the 3 of us to gather round, watch Mass, and pray. It was a peaceful, solitary sacred space among the bustling activity of a rehabilitation facility.

I Found God today in a created peaceful sacred space.

Encouraging Enthusiasm

Today my brother spent the morning with my dad at the rehab. It being the weekend, my dad had only 1 therapy today that was made up of taking a shower. He was somewhat dismayed that he didn’t even get to go into the gym and told the therapist that he wanted to practice walking. That was such a wonderful thing to hear. The therapist obliged and came back in the afternoon to take my dad for a walk around the floor with his walker. It is so encouraging.

I Found God today encouraged by my dad’s enthusiasm.

Stepping Out

My mom and I spent this morning with my dad continuing to be amazed at his progress. In physical therapy, instead of a walker, the therapist had my dad try walking with a cane. He tried several times, but couldn’t really get the rhythm of it. It seemed to trip him up more than assist. So, the therapist suggested he try walking without any device. After making sure the therapist would be holding onto him, my dad took off like he was on a mission. Evidently, he needed more of a challenge, so the therapist got out the ladder looking contraption and put it on the floor. My dad walked through it, stepping over each rung. We were all very impressed.

I Found God today in my dad’s continued progress.

God’s Got It

A few months ago, my son was hurt on the seasonal job he was working for. It has been a long road for him and he has been searching for a new job. Today I was literally on my knees praying that God give him a job that would be most beneficial for him and his family. Just then I received a message from him that he got a job. I was impressed. To me, it was God reminding me that He does have my worries and concerns taken care of. It helped me to remember that I can indeed trust God with everything.

I Found God today in a reminder to trust Him.

Divide and Conquer

I spent the majority of the day with my dad at the rehab and was with him for all his therapies and doctors’ visits. It was good to see first hand the progress he continues to make. Today he walked up and down the set of steps they have in the gym there. His therapist gave him the handy guidance of “up with the good, down with the bad”, which was the same advice my mom has received. It means that going up the stairs, you lead with the good leg and going down, you lead with the weak or injured one. I spoke with the doctor who is still working on getting his blood pressure medication tweaked just right. And I spoke to the neurologist who evaluates people who recently had a stroke. While I was there, my brother spent the day with my mom and took her to a dermatology appointment. When I met up with them, my mom reported what a good job he did taking care of her. Then he took her to have dinner with my dad. It was nice to divide and conquer.

I Found God today being able to share care with my brother.

Prompted to Pray

My mom’s friend came to visit today, play the piano, and have lunch as they do on Tuesdays. My brother visited my dad this morning, so it was nice to have some normalcy. In our conversations, we talked about how God makes us aware of His Presence in so many circumstances. My mom’s friend receives a booklet with different and specific prayers for each day. On the day that she learned about my dad’s stroke, her prayer book included intentions for people who have had a stroke. I would say that is more than coincidence. And to know that there were probably hundreds of others who had the book and said the prayer too really touches my heart.

I Found God today in His prompting to pray for stroke victims.

Don’t Hold On

There is a daily reflection that I received a couple of days ago that I have left in my inbox so I can read it over and over again. I need to remember this not just every day, but it seems every second of every minute of every day.

“Don’t hold onto anything. There is nothing that you are holding onto that is safer in your hands than in God’s.” Dr. Greg Bottaro from The Mindful Catholic

I Found God today in a reminder that He is safely holding everything.

Spiritual Food Arrived

Yesterday my dad was wondering if the TV in his room had EWTN so he could watch Mass today. I reviewed the list and it did not. However, we do have the capability of recording programs on the system at the house. I found how to work it on my computer pad and recorded today’s Mass on EWTN. I brought the pad when my mom and I visited my dad later this morning and we all gathered around. We watched most of it and turned it off when my sister and her husband came. A few minutes later, a Eucharistic minister came with Communion about the time it would have been happening on the program. Dad asked if she had lunch. She said she had spiritual food. It was beautiful to receive Communion there with the small group of my family. As soon as we finished praying, lunch came. The timing was perfect.

I Found God today receiving His spiritual food.
