Surgery Went Well

My daughter in law has been having troubles with one of her ankles for a very long time. Finally she was able to find a doctor who diagnosed the torn ligament properly. Today she had surgery on it. My son took the day off work to be with her. I helped by picking the kids up from school and making them dinner. After the surgery, my daughter in law hunkered down in her bed to rest with her foot elevated. When I brought the kids home, we all had a party in her room for a while. Before I went home for the night, I was happy to know that she had gotten up and gone to the bathroom. I think that’s one of the biggest hurdles. And she did fine with my son’s help. I was so glad that the surgery went well and that my daughter in law is functioning pretty good. I am praying for a speedy and effective recovery.

I Found God today as my daughter in law is doing well after her surgery.

Learned From Dad

Today I was looking through a scrapbook that my dad made of some of his award winning photos. I came across a picture of a cabin in the mountains that looked somewhat familiar. It turned out that it was one of the same places that I took a picture of when I drove the dirt mountain road a couple of weeks ago. I feel that I learned so much about photography from my dad and notice that a lot of the pictures I capture resemble his. That brings me joy.

I Found God today following what I learned from my dad.

About the Medals

Today I had a medical appointment. The nurse noticed my necklace and asked about all the medals on it, which is quite a collection. I explained each one to her. I have a sturdy chain that holds a crucifix, a Miraculous Medal, St. Michael the Archangel, and the Guardian angel. Also, after my mom died, a friend sent me a treble clef charm. I put that on the same ring as the Guardian angel. It seemed appropriate. The woman was wearing a medal of St. Christopher. She said she belonged to the church I went to this past weekend. I told her the story of my mom playing the keyboard there and her friend directing the choir. That made the connection of the treble clef charm a little more significant. Our conversation was an unexpected blessing.

I Found God today in a faith filled conversation with a stranger.

Memories of Mom

This morning I was up early and went to Mass right away. I went to the church that my parents and I belonged to many years ago. At that time, my mom played the organ for the choir and her friend was the director. My dad sang and I did also for a few years. I became good friends with a couple who met and sang in the choir and eventually got married. Now, almost 40 years later, they have 8 children, 9 grandchildren, and still attend the same church. I have only seen them a couple times during the past few years, however. So I was surprised to see my friend get up after the homily and talk about stewardship. The first story he told was when the church moved out of the old small temporary building to the now big, beautiful structure. Unfortunately, they didn’t accommodate for a good music system for whatever reason. My mom and her friend had to advocate for a very long time to get only an adequate system. My friend was very involved at that time. While he didn’t use names, I knew exactly what he was talking about. After Mass, I surprised him when I said hello as neither of us anticipated seeing each other. While we were speaking, a man who sang in the choir with us those many years ago joined the conversation. He actually sang at the Mass that just ended. He didn’t recognize me until I introduced myself. He remembered me, but more than that he remembered the kindness of my mother. When the choir was just getting going, he was young. He always had vision problems, but managed to read and memorize music. He shared a story of when he was trying to learn a particularly difficult piece of music. He came to my mom’s house a couple times and she helped him work through it. Evidently he tried to pay her, but she wouldn’t accept it. He was so grateful. I was so grateful for these special memories of my mom today.

I Found God today in beautiful memories of my mom.

Mercy, Not Punishment

It is a common thought and feeling that we aren’t good enough for God. We make mistakes, we hurt others and ourselves sometimes, we are selfish and want to do things our way. And once we discover the love God has for us, we realize how unworthy we are of that. Perhaps we think that we need to be perfect before God truly loves us. Today is the feast of St. Faustina. She was a religious sister who had visions of Jesus. She also wrote a diary of everything she heard and saw. At one point, Jesus told her that He was sending her to the world to tell them of His great love and mercy. He said, “I am sending you with my mercy to the people of the whole world. I do not want to punish aching mankind because I desire to heal it, pressing it to My merciful heart. So before the day of justice, I am sending the day of mercy.”  I heard this message in a podcast today and it brought me peace and hope. At the same time, I know it takes my cooperation. It is my responsibility to turn to Jesus, to God, accept my faults, and ask for His mercy. St. Faustina made this easier with a picture of Jesus and the words, “Jesus I Trust in You”, also known as the Divine Mercy image. I can look at it, pray the words, and ask for God’s mercy over and over again.

I Found God today in His message of mercy.

Clear Adventure

My friend and I decided to try to take a drive in the mountains this week. However, she cares for her mother and she wasn’t feeling well the day we planned on going. I completely understand that situation. So, we decided to wait. We had the opportunity to go today and took it. My friend directed me to one of her favorite places called Twin Lakes. As described, there are 2 lakes at the base of an amazing mountain range. One lake was a beautiful navy blue color. The one directly behind it was a stunning aqua color. I don’t know how the 2 side by side were so different, but it was beautiful and the scenery was beyond spectacular. God blessed us with another perfect day. To top it off, I picked up my new glasses yesterday, so I could see even better than I would have if we would have gone the previous day. My friend and I were both in awe of the gift we were given once more.

I Found God today in the gift of another beautiful day appreciating nature.

Musical Reminder

Today I was reminded of a video I took 2 years ago. It was my mom and her friend playing a duet on my mom’s piano. They were both wearing their “Plays Well With Others” t-shirts. I loved listening to them again and seeing my mom enjoying her music. It made me happy. It made me sad. And I was glad I came across it.

I Found God today listening to my mom’s music.

Flowers From the Window

My neighbor and I visited on the porch this morning. While we were there, the lawn guys came and mowed, which led us to talk about our outside flowers and plants. We share the sidewalk, so we can see her house and garden area from some of our windows, and she can see ours. Earlier this summer, we both put in new plants. Some of them were given to us by her daughter in law who was thinning out her garden. My neighbor said she thought she may need to move some of hers around a bit as they grew differently than she had anticipated. I told her I loved all the flowers she had. She said she chose many flowers as she wanted my mom to be able to see them from her window. That was one of the most thoughtful things I have heard and my heart was very moved. My mom did, in fact, enjoy looking out the window and seeing the new plants and flowers that were there.

I Found God today in my thoughtful neighbor.

Piano Music Box

Today I came across 4 piano music boxes upon a shelf behind the pianos. As I thought about the best place for them, I remembered I was going to have dinner with our favorite caregiver tonight. We have been keeping in touch and it was a good time to get together. She was so good with my mom and would guide her to the piano and encourage her to play. She even knew which pieces of music were doable. I thought it would be a nice momento for her to have one of the piano music boxes so I packed it up and brought it to dinner. The young woman was so surprised and we shared a few tears. We caught up on life events. She was so excited to tell me that she is getting baptized in a few weeks. When she was at the house, we often talked about faith and God. She was going to one of the popular churches in the area and I guess I just assumed she was already baptized. In any case, she was pretty excited about it. She also talked about some tough decisions she made in her relationships as she tries to live a “pure and honest life” in her words. I told her I was proud of her for doing the hard but important things to care for herself. It was such a blessing to see her.

I Found God today in the blessing of a compassionate young woman.

Caring Musician

Today I had lunch with our piano friend and another piano friend who we used to see every couple of months or so. She is younger than my mom and her friend and is still teaching piano. She is also very involved in her church and has been for many years. Part of what she does is to care for some of the elderly people. Well, they are elderly now, but they weren’t when she first started in the ministry. Now she visits 3 ladies who are all over 90 years old. She helps them with whatever they need, takes them out and about if appropriate, and makes sure they are well taken care of. She even arranges musicians to go visit and bring them some joy. The other day she took one woman out to lunch at one of her favorite spots. She can’t see well, so the restaurant staff met them at the back door where they helped the woman get to her seat and doted over her. I remember this happening with my mom. Sometimes when we went out, there were people who just wanted to help and were super attentive. Our friend told us another story of taking a 99 year old woman to the bank to try to get some financial situations straightened out. They were a little less helpful. I have found it can really go either way. While some people are very helpful, others seemed to be bothered by the situation. Perhaps they are uncomfortable with elderly people. Whatever the case, these ladies are certainly blessed to have the friend in their lives.

I Found God today in a selfless, caring woman.
