Live Like Magi

Today at church the priest spoke about the Gospel reading of the Epiphany and a homily by Pope Francis. It was a message that really spoke to my heart. There were 3 basic themes: Look up, take the journey, share your gifts. First, we know that our world is in a bad way and it is very easy to get sucked into the catastrophic media hype. This distracts us from the reality that there is goodness in the world and that God wants that good for us. We need to remember to look up, to see God, to focus on things that are loving and true. Then, we need to trust enough to take the journey of life. God has given us this one life and we should live it well. Once we find God, we can more easily realize the path He has set out for us. And that path is the one that will bring us the most fulfillment. He has also given each of us specific gifts and talents. When we share those with others, we are truly living God’s plan for our lives. I know I need to work on all of these things. I hope to remember to start at the beginning by looking up, remembering God is in control, and asking Him for what I need to live each day as I should.

I Found God today in a reminder to look up, take the journey, and share my gifts.

Frozen Falls

The weather was very mild today, so my son and I took advantage of it and went for a short hike. It being winter, warmish, and very dry here, I wasn’t really expecting to see any outstanding scenery. We decided on a particular hike, but when we got to the trailhead, the parking lot was completely full. So we went on further. We stopped at another spot further up and took a trail that followed the stream and led to two waterfalls. I was very surprised to see that the waterfalls were frozen. Well, not completely frozen. There was a layer of ice on top and the water was flowing underneath. It was a beautiful sight. Had we taken the original trail, we would not have seen it.

I Found God today in beautiful nature.

Homes of Love and Peace

One of the reflections that I read today said, “More and more, make your homes places of love and peace,” quoted by St. Teresa of Calcutta. Those were exactly the words of encouragement that I needed. And that is what I need to strive to do more of.

I Found God today in needed words of encouragement.

A Day’s Difference

For the last couple of days, my dad has been having problems with his foot and in a lot of pain. We got him to the doctor yesterday who gave him a super heavy duty anti-inflammatory pain reliever. He took the pill in the evening when we returned. Our neighbors invited us over for dinner last night, but he just wasn’t feeling up to it, and my mom and I wanted to make sure he was ok. The neighbors were gracious and postponed. Today my dad was feeling amazingly better, so we made it over the neighbors. They moved in about a year ago and we have enjoyed getting to know them. Before dinner, the husband led us in prayer. The food was great and the conversation was upbeat. We all seem to have a lot in common and had a very nice time. We were glad that we were all able to get together. Today was a complete turn around from yesterday when my dad was in so much pain.

I Found God today in a day’s difference for the better.

Looking for the Light

A friend has been on my mind recently. This morning I thought of her again as I was praying and took action right away by texting her to see how she was doing. After a while, I received a text back. Then another. Then another. She was really struggling. I stopped, said a prayer, and called her. We talked about life challenges and how things don’t always turn out the way we envisioned. We talked about how difficult it can be at times to believe in a God who allows us to hurt and suffer. That doesn’t feel very much like love. And we asked that age-old question, “WHY?” I, personally, have never found a suitable answer to that question. But I do know that we need one another. When we are in agony, we need people to empathize with us. We need to talk with people who will listen. Often, we find strength in others who are in similar situations. We need faithful people who will point us to God when we are in darkness and can’t find the light switch on our own. My friend and I both needed each other today and were both more hopeful at the end of the conversation. I was glad that I followed God’s prompting to reach out to her.

I Found God today connecting with a hurting friend.

How To Ponder

I know some people have certain traditions that they do every year to ring in the new year. For example, my travelling brother cleaned his whole trailer out. He said he like to start out fresh and clean. I thought about how I can improve myself in the upcoming year. I mean, I always need to be nicer, more patient, and more loving. But those are general ideas. For the last couple of days, my parents and I have been discussing New Years Resolutions. My mom read a meditation about following Mary’s example as she was humble and peaceful before God. Another reflection I read also encouraged me to emulate Mary as she pondered the events of Jesus’ conception and birth. It even said she “allowed them to work their way into the marrow of her bones.” That sounded pretty intense. I do like to ponder. The problem is, often I find myself dwelling on the wrong things such as what I could have/would have/should have said or done. Then today I read part of Pope Francis’ homily from New Years Day.

The Holy Father noted that Mary pondered both the joys and sorrows of life, dwelling on them, “with God,” in her heart. She pondered them by always turning them over to God. When we do that, the Pope said, “God, Who keeps us in His heart, then comes to dwell in our lives.” At the beginning of the new year, the Pope continued, “we too, as Christians on our pilgrim way, feel the need to set out anew from the centre, to leave behind the burdens of the past and to start over from the things that really matter.”

That gave me a better viewpoint and a more specific way of letting go of the past by giving them to God. Then I should be better at living more peacefully in the present.

I Found God today with help to direct my pondering to a more peaceful end.

Timely Proposal

My sister went to a surprise 60th birthday party for a friend of hers over the weekend and told me a very touching story. Her friend married her husband 21 years ago. Evidently, it was a quick decision and wedding. At the party, the husband said that he had never made an official proposal, so he got down on his knee and asked his wife if she would stay with him for the rest of his life. That is one of the sweetest things I have ever heard.

I Found God today in a loving husband.

It Does Take a Community

Today at church, we celebrated the Holy Family – Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. The deacon talked about how he got together with his family over Christmas. The crowd consisted of grandparents, parents, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandchildren. He realized how important the role of each relationship played in the development of the younger generations. He explained that the parents obviously play a huge part in the upbringing of their children, but there are so many other people who contribute. There are teachers, mentors, coaches, and so many who are a part of their lives. It is important for each of us to remember that also as we are in contact with others. Our lives can truly influence others – especially the children who we are deeply connected with.

I Found God today in a reminder our responsibility to help form young people.

Chickadee Call

My parents and I went up to the cabin in the mountains for a few days as the weather was pretty mild. Shortly after we arrived, my dad filled up the bird feeders and we placed them outside around the house. After several hours around dusk, we finally saw a bird at one of the feeders. My mom recognized it as a Chickadee. She keeps track of all the birds that visit. She also has a magazine subscription that explains their behaviors. She said that the Chickadee would go tell all his friends and they would all be coming. Then, the other kinds of birds would follow. Sure enough, the next day, there were several Chickadees flying back and forth from tree to feeder. After a little while, the other species joined them – and they came exactly in the order that my mom said they would. It was nice to see the birds and to watch them. It is fascinating how they are all dependent upon one another. And I was again impressed by my mother’s knowledge.

I Found God today watching birds.

Just Needs Time

A few weeks ago, my sister fell down her stairs. She has been slowly recovering, but had a set back in the last week. She just kept feeling worse and worse. When she came over for Christmas, she wasn’t her usual bubbly self. She napped and spent much of the time wrapped up in a blanket. But, she went right back to work the next day. I have been checking in on her all week to see how she is feeling. She finally had enough and went back to her doctor early this morning. They ran more tests and took more x-rays, but found no new injury or complication. It eased all of our minds to know that. It seems it will just take her some more time to completely heal.

I Found God today knowing that my sister did not have any additional medical issue.
